Gallery of the High-Paving stone
Founded in 1953 by the Dominican father Gilles Valley, the Galerie of the High-Paving stone is a non-profit-making association, nondenominational, having for mission of promoting the young artists by organizing their first exposure to Paris.
It thus “launched” a certain number of artists having acquired later on a great notoriety, in particular Arman, Claude Bellegarde, Mark Brusse, Olivier Debré, Dominique De Beir, Marc Devade, Marino Di Teana, Sylvie Fanchon, James Guitet, Rémy Hysbergue, Shirley Jaffe, Ange Leccia, Xavier Longobardi, Patrice Pantin, Tony Soulié, Bernard Turiot, Marie Vassilieff, Gabrielle Wanbaugh, Leon Zack and much of others…
She also profited from the active support of some elder which sponsored and continues, of decade in decade, to support her action: Jean-Michel Atlan, Camille Bryen, Jean Deyrolle, Raoul Dufy, Auguste Herbin, Etienne Hajdu, Hans Hartung, Yves Klein, Charles Lapicque, Georges Mathieu, Henri Matisse, Serge Poliakoff, Nicolas de Staël, Pierre Soulages, Jacques Villon…
The Gallery of the High-Paving stone organizes from five to eight personal exposures per annum, for young people (less than forty years) artists having made application form while sending or by depositing a file. More than five hundred files are received, each year, and are analyzed by a Committee of Programming which, beyond the selection process, spendthrift of the councils and privileges the direct contact, in workshop, with the artists candidates. The reception of the artists is also assured once per week in the buildings the gallery.
The Gallery of the High-Paving stone proposes also “freehands” with art critics or has particularly active collectors in the promotion of the young creation. Once per annum, it opens its buildings with an association of province, with for objective fighting against a too parisianocentric tendency of the contemporary art in France. The action of the Gallery of the High-Paving stone is not registered in opposition with the commercial arcades, but in parallel and complement with them, completing the work of grubbing and the taking risk which they always do not have time or the means of carrying out.
