Gallery of France

The Gallery of France , created in 1942 and closed in 2006, was in the Années 1950 and 1960, under the impulse of Myriam Prévot and Gildo Caputo, one of the most important Parisian galleries.

History

1942-1950

Opened with the assistance of Jacques Lambert in February 1942 by Paul Martin, industrialist of Lyons origin, assisted by Raimond Herbet, the Gallery of France exposes as of February 1943, " 12 painters of aujourd'hui" , prefaced by Gaston Diehl (Bazaine, Boron, Estève, Fougeron, Gischia, Lapicque, Moal, Manessier, Pinion, Robin, Singier and Jacques Villon). Several of these painters had attended in the years 1930 the Académie Ranson, the majority had taken part in work of the International exhibition of 1937 then to the exposure of the " Twenty young painters of French tradition " , organized by Bazaine in 1941, first manifestation of the painting of avant-garde under the Occupation.

" The Gallery becomes a meeting place. For some, a comfort and a recourse. Picasso, of its black look, intensely attentive, follows - and controls almost - all that is born then again and unexpected. Directs, silencer, often stops there. Éluard and Jean Paulhan there rencontrent" , Raimond Herbet will remember ( the Sixties with the Gallery of France , Donation Mario Prassinos, 1993, p. I).

1951-1981

Yielded at the end of 1950 by Paul Martin to Myriam Provost and Gildo Caputo (which had animated of 1945 to 1947 the Drouin gallery and, after 1947, the gallery Billiet-Caputo), the Gallery of France joins together in " 1951" presences; , its first exposure in January 1951, Boron, Dominguez, Estève, Gischia, Jacques Lagrange, Lapicque, Moal, Manessier, Pinion, Prassinos, Singier, Relieve, Tailleux and Tal Coat.

Presenting the biggest part of the painters of the not figuration and Lyric abstraction, it becomes in the years 1950 and 1960 one of the most important Parisian art galleries. " The Gallery of France was then a true institution, it dominated the international artistic life and had become the obligatory place of exposure of any artist coming from the whole world which sought the dedication of Paris, for some time still capital world of Article international Grands Prix for its artists, exposures overall muséales (the Museum of Modern art, of the Town of Paris had become a true branch of the gallery), waiting lists for the collectionneurs" , writing Jean-Robert Arnaud (" Cimaise" , 1990, p. 7).

After the suicide of Myriam Provost in July 1977, Gildo Caputo continues to direct the gallery until 1981.
