History

Located in the middle of the Salento, Galatina was probably a Greek colony as lets it suppose the toponym of the city, that one can translate by “ beautiful Athens ” or “ Athens of milk ”.

Galatina, which one formerly called “Saint-Pierre de Galatina” was surrounded with the Moyen-âge of Fortification S, set up in 1355 and rebuilt two centuries later. The only accesses to the city were doors, of which some are visible still today. The principal door was the “Door Ground”, currently disappeared, which connected Place Aligheri to Saint-Pierre place. The other accesses were the “Door of the Capuchins” (or Arc Cadura ), built in 1725 and located at the east, the “Saint-Pierre Door” (or New Porte , placed at north, and the “Door Light”, which had to be rebuilt in 1795, and which is oldest of the still existing doors.
