Some think of an Italian origin: of calata , which means the staircase, or most probably the word “Galat” coming from the Celtic people of the Galates which settled in Anatolia, after the Grande forwarding. In the history, Galata is often called Pera, which comes from the old Greek name for the place, of in Sykais de Peran of , literally “field on other side”. Much later, at the time of the Byzantine period, Galata is known as the site of the large tower of which an iron chain could be drawn in period of war to block the entry of the Gold Horn. This work was destroyed during the Fourth crusade, but was rebuilt later by the Génois like “turn of Christ”, and to date survives (see: Turn of Galata). Of 1273 with 1453, the district becomes a colony génoise before being taken by the Ottoman Empire during the head office of Constantinople.
