She was discovered at the time of the passage of the probe Voyager 2 in 1989 (temporary designation S/1989 NR 4 ). Its name comes from Galatée , a néréide (nymph marinades) Greek Mythologie.

Galatée is small a Celestial body 158 km maximum length irregular and does not present any geological activity.

The Orbit of Galatée, near of planet, is unstable and the moon declines towards Neptune because of the forces of tide of this one. It should probably break one day, form new a planetary Anneau or be crushed on Neptune.
