History
Gaillac is a thousand-year-old city located between Toulouse, Albi and Montauban. It built its reputation on its vineyard which bears its name.Gaillac is born first once at the second century before our era. The Gallic ones of the place make of it a river port by which they export their wine towards the Roman province of Narbonnaise. When Aquitaine is absorbed by Rome, Gaillac knows prosperity with Montans which provides the containers.
The Low Empire and the Great invasions however destroy the city which one finds any more no trace. It will have to be waited until the monks of Saint-Michel obtain from the bishop of Albi of the privileges of vine growing, into 972, so that a stable population reconstitutes and rebuilds the city. Initially crossed to Bordeaux to be exported in England, the wines of Gaillac are unceasingly improved and will end up being essential for themselves.
During the wars of religion, the Gaillac ois remained catholic are driven out city by the Protestants. They will take refuge with Castelnau-with-Montmiral. After the Massacre of the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre (August 24th, 1572 in Paris), Gaillacois massacre the Protestants: 74 over the 90 present downtown.
It is also a town of history, one discovers there the abbey Saint-Michel (13th century), the Château of Foucauld (17th century) surrounded by its park, the maze of the narrow streets which draw the crown of historical Gaillac etc
