Gagra

Gagra (გაგრა in Géorgien, Russian Гагра in and Abkhazian) is a town of Georgia, located on the north-eastern coast of the country, on the Black Sea. The subtropical climate of the area had made of Gagra a popular seaside resort during the imperial Russia and the Soviet Union. The city had a population of 26.636 inhabitants in 1989 but that Ci decreased much because of war of 1989-1993 and many expulsion géorgiens of the area, controlled by the Abkhazian separatists. The city is always attended by Russian tourists, coming from the Russian seaside resort of Sotchi, located 22 kilometers more at north.

History

Gagra for the Soviet period

After the Russian Revolution of 1905, a revolutionary government was established in Gagra, which founded the Republic of Gagra. This one was quickly annexed and the revolutionists of Gagra stopped in mass. The First World War had disastrous consequences on the city because of destruction of the tourist infrastructures. During the Russian Révolution of 1917 the Bolsheviks controlled the city quickly, in spite of a short call to resistance launched by the France.

The leader of the Bolsheviks, Lénine, by a decree of 1919, ordered the establishment of a " station of holidays for the travailleurs" in Gagra, by nationalizing a complex built by Oldenburg. Gagra was used as seaside resort and like centers for the soldiers wounded during the Second world war. After the war, several Sanatorium S was built in the city the station formed part of the " Riviera soviétique" , together extending along the Black Sea.

During and after the armed conflict of 1989-1993

At the end of the years 1980, the tensions between the communities géorgiennes and Abkhazians emplifièrent themselves in the area. The war burst between 1992 and 1993, which ended in a catastrophic defeat for the forces of the young republic géorgienne vis-a-vis the Abkhazian separatists. Hundreds of thousands of Géorgiens were dispossessed of their houses and in an episode of " cleaning ethnique" , of the thousands of others were carried out. Gagra, like the town of Soukhoumi suffers important damage. The chief rebels tchetchene Shamil Basayev led the combat to Gagra in favor of the Abkhazian Moslem separatists against the Christians géorgiens, taking part in particular in the executions against the latter.

Tourist sites

The principal monuments of Gagra are the ruins of the fortress of Abaata (IVe and 5th centuries before JC), a church of the 6th century, the tower of defense Marlinsky (1841) as well as the palate of Prince d' Oldenburg, built at the 19th century.
