Gago Coutinho
Carlos Viegas Gago Coutinho (Lisbon, 1869; Lisbon, 1959) was an officer of the Portuguese Marine , navigator and Historien. It was born in the district from the Madragoa.
With the service of the Portuguese Navy, he traverses the four corners of the world and arrived at the rank of Admiral. At the same time, he undertakes a scientific immense operation of investigation and publishes an important variety of geographical and historical work, mainly around Portuguese navigation like, for example, the Route of the voyage of Vasco da Gama and his version of the Lusíadas .
From 1898, it is made known for its geographical maps of delimitation of the borders of the overseas territories. During its work, Gago Coutinho makes a crossing of the Africa. While joining Sacadura Cabral, it carries out in 1921 the overhead crossing Lisbon - Funchal (Madeira) and, in 1922, the first overhead crossing of the Atlantique Southern, lasting which it flies the plane with a great rigor, using a Sextant of its invention.
Gago Coutinho carried out a great number of missions and services for the State and, at the end of its life, it was dedicated being studied of the history of the great discoveries and Portuguese navigations, writing several works joined together in the collection Náutica back Descobrimentos .
Like recognition of all its work, Gago Coutinho was named honorary director of the Portuguese naval Academy in 1926 and was distinguished as pilot aviator. It withdrew military life in 1939.
