Gagnon (Quebec)

Gagnon is an old mining city Quebec located at 389 km in the north of Bay-Comeau on the Coast-North. Constituted the January 28th 1960, it owes its name with honourable the Onésime Gagnon, Minister for the mines and Lieutenant-governor of the Quebec. The principal employer of the city was the mining Compagnie Quebec-Cartier which ceased its activities with the mine of Fire Lake the October 12th 1984, involving the closing and the demolition of all the infrastructures of this city in 1985. At the beginning of the Years 1980, the city counted 4000 inhabitants.
History
The city was founded in 1960 following the discovery of Iron ore in the area of the Lac Jeannine in 1957. One indicated banks of the Lac Barbel like ideal site to build the future town of Gagnon. The city taken quickly of the width; one built approximately 25 houses per month. The infrastructures the such hospital, the arena, the shopping mall Embroiderer, the airport, the churches, the primary schools and secondary and other trade were built quickly to facilitate the life of the new inhabitants who amounted already to 1.250 in 1960. However, the city remained isolated from the remainder of the Quebec because it was accessible only by Railroad or Avion.
It is only in 1987, that is to say 2 years after the closing of the city which was completed the road 389 connecting Bay-Comeau to the Labrador. Like Schefferville located at the border of the Quebec and Labrador, the saving in Gagnon rested only on the extraction of the ore of Fer.
As of 1977, the resources of the mine of the Lac Jeannine became exhausted and one had to transfer the operations to the mine from Fire Lake, located at approximately 90 km in the North-East of Gagnon. However, the crisis of the iron of 1982 was right of the town of Gagnon and the hamlet of Fire lake which had to close and be demolished. Thus, the October 12th 1984, one announced that the operations with the mine of Fire Lake was going to be stopped, that the town of Gagnon was going to be shaven and the compensated inhabitants. In 1985, one proceeded to the Démolition of the city. One by one the services were stopped and people started to leave the city. Work of demolition started and at the end of this year.
Today, only the vestiges of what was formerly the street #1 point out the short life of this city of which the destiny was tributary of the Iron ore. The Lake Barbel, as for him, continues to attract campers during the beautiful season.
