Gaffiot

The Gaffiot , of the name of its author Felix Gaffiot (1870 - 1937), is a Latin dictionary - French become usual and traditional for the French-speaking public Latinist. It was published in 1934 following work that its author realized on the basis of ordering of the editor Hachette.

Presentation

In its original edition not shortened, Gaffiot is an imposing work of more than 1700 pages. Its illustrations and its typography made it famous.

Version 2000 of this dictionary includes/understands moreover an atlas colors, a bibliography, a chronology, the rules of the Latin scansion, a table of the weights, measurement and currencies.

Fortune

Gaffiot replaced the Quicherat and Daveluy, which reigned on the Latin studies since 1844. Since, it was essential everywhere, in its full version or shortened. In 2001, appears a news edition enriched, realized by Pierre Flobert on the basis of 70 000 cards (50 000 for the common nouns, 20 000 for the proper names). The seizure Informatique was carried out with Madagascar.

Criticisms

Taking into consideration the most recent study, certain authors of the 21e century announce that the work of Felix Gaffiot includes/understands some minor errors and approximations, for example with regard to the respective use of has (in front of consonant) or of ab (in front of vowel). The Journaliste Ugo Rankl in addition recalls in 2001 in the Point that this dictionary, in its original grinding, is expurgé of any term with sexual connotation. Those were reintroduced in the last edition of the work, carried out by Pierre Flobert.
