Gaetan Girouard

Gaetan Girouard was a journalist and Québécois TV host born the March 10th 1965, with Saint-Hyacinthe, and deceased the January 14th 1999, with Quebec.

Biography

Gaetan Girouard makes studies in information and journalism before becoming stimulating of radio station with CKBS in his native area of Saint-Hyacinthe in Montérégie in 1981 and one year later with CHEM in the town of Granby. He also plays a small role in the film Forty Anne-Claire Poirier in 1982. In 1991, its journalistic career is directed towards television when it coanime, with Benoît Johnson, the emission of public affairs 911 with the Réseau VAT. It is thereafter to defer daily to the morning emission Salut, Hello! and takes finally the orders of its own emission in 1997 with J.E. /J.E on line .

During its career, it was one of the first journalists to make on line reports of action (" Live-TV") and presented itself on major scenes of topicality, in particular during the Crise of Oka in 1990 and full heart of the riots of the Cut Stanley in Montreal in 1993. In 1998, its qualities of highly skilled journalist and his keen work are rewarded and recognized by the public which it grattifie of the MétroStar of the best organizer of emissions of public affairs, that it decides to divide with his partner of work and friend, Jocelyne Cazin.

He was married with Nathalie Préfontaine in April 1997, after ten years of common life. They have them two children: Justine, born in 1990 and Marie-Claude, born in 1992.

Death

Gaetan Girouard is deceased in January 1999 by suicide, following a strong nervous breakdown, extremely probably related to his lack of confidence in oneself, his work (increasingly present in its life, whereas it was often afraid to lose it), like several continuations against J.E., which worried it enormously. The advertisement made the effect of a bomb in Quebec and was very médiatisée.

The Québécois Association of Prevention of the Suicide (AQPS) published in 2005 a study showing a bond between the cover of the suicide of Gaetan Girouard in the media and a rise of the number of suicides lasting the same period.

Here some extracts of the newspaper the Duty treating this study:

on January 14th, 1999, the journalist-high-speed motorboat of VAT put an end to its days, plunging Quebec in stupor. Six years later, a study shows that there indeed was a “effect Gaetan Girouard” on the Inhabitants of Quebec, which chose death in greater number in the months following this death.

“January is the month when suicide rate is lowest in Quebec, with a little less than 100 suicides. However, for the period from January 15th to February 15th, 1999 the month following the suicide of G. Girouard, one counted 155 deaths per suicide”, showed Michel Tousignant, the principal author of this study undertaken by the Research center and of intervention on the suicide and the euthanasia (CRISIS).

Other made disconcerting, the CRISIS noted an unquestionable impact on the municipality where the drama was played. With Holy-Foy, one deplored six hangings in the 38 days who followed death by hanging of Gaetan Girouard. By comparison, there had been only 19 death per hanging during the three previous years in this same municipality.

All this anguish in the population was also measured by the means of the line prevention commits suicide (1 866 CALLS) which, in the four days following the death of deferring, 200% received more calls.
