Gadzarts

Gadz' Arts or Gadzarts is the nickname given to the pupils or former students of the 3Ecole Nationale Sup3erieure of arts and trades (ENSAM). It is about a contraction of Gars of Arts ( Arts , or the Arts and Métiers , is the diminutive given to the School).

Traditions

The community Gadz' Arts proudly asserts its traditions based on the values of mutual aid and fraternity like on the oral memory of many anecdotes and many songs related to the history of the school.
  • the pupils carry in the Schools a blouse (a “Biaude” in Argad' Z) traditionally gray in first and second white year then in last year, which they personalize individually. The blouses of first year are generally rather sober. Those of second and third years are often the support of reasons and coloured drawings rather required.

  • Gadz' Arts have also a Uniforme (a “Zag” in Argad' Z), reminiscence of their past Militaire. The current uniform is of color navy blue and very near to the uniform of the officers of the French Marine, it raises the rank of Sign of vessel of 2 Nd classifies the Royal one.
  • At the time of their entry at the school, the pupils is seen allotting a nickname, the surn' S (of which the graphic signature is called the bucque one), that they will preserve thereafter in their relations with the other pupils or former students.
  • Each pupil is the godfather (known as “Old”) of a pupil of following promotion. This continuation of sponsorships is the subject of durable relations which perdurent in time well beyond the schooling. It is called family.
  • a rule of Savoir-vivre wants that the use of the tu is of rigor between all the gadzarts.

The traditions comprise one period known as of Transmission of the Traditions (postal and telecommunications authorities, or more traditionally Usinage) which, without being a hazing itself, is one period of gadzaric presentation of the folklore, emulation and structuring of the group via various activities and demonstrations whose secrecy is maintained only to preserve the effect of surprised near the new arrivals. It allows the transmission of a certain oral memory, songs, slang, history and myths of the school. It allows the installation of a system of sponsorship based on the transmission and the division. This period makes it possible to create a cohesion in a promotion of pupils coming from different horizons and is not foreign with the success of the company of the former students. The participation is not obligatory and it not participation cuts only with dimensions folk one of the life of promotion.

The company of the former students

The company of the former students of the ENSAM gathers more than 28000 engineers, and presents one of the highest rates of adhesion for an organization of former students. The mutual aid is an important point of the community gadzarts that is within the company of the former students or the many regional groups. The mutual aid in its most direct forms represents meadows of 14% of the budget of the company of the former students.

Slang

Gadz' Arts use a particular slang (Argad' Z), mixture of slang and military term such as “the chimery” which indicates the room where was locked up the recalcitrant pupils at the time Napoleonean.

The words are also often shortened and enriched by a final in “S” or “Z”; or of a prefix in “Za”. The vocabulary gadz' aric is very varied. For example, zadoigt means glove, babasse means computer.

The writing is generally done in Gothic letters (Zagoth) for the special occasionss.

Currency

The currency of Gadzarts is Fraternité as the words of the anthem of Gadz' Arts in the " show it; verse in Fraternité".

Anecdotes

  • There existed a current confusion between the Quat' z' arts and Gadz' arts, in particular due to the memorable festivals organized by the two corpora of pupils. Quat' z' arts bringing together the pupils of Four arts, Architecture, Painting, Sculpture and Engraving (more generally all pupils of beautiful arts), their principal demonstration being the Ball of Quat' z' Arts, of which the last, to date, take place in 1966 (in 1967 they did not find a room to organize it and the year according to, the events from May-June 1968, carried a heavy blow to him, which it was not concerned). It is in particular Quat' z' arts which sings Georges Brassens and not Gadz' arts.

  • There exists a whole series of recurring jokes on the gadzarts, the majority based on the following model:

an engineer of the Mines, a Polytechnicien and a gadzarts must build a bridge.

the mining engineer builds a bridge, this one collapses, it does not know why.
the polytechnician builds a bridge, this one collapses but it knows why.
the gadzarts builds a bridge, the bridge holds, it does not know why but it holds.

This joke would go back to the exploit of Felix Moreaux (1843) who, whereas he was only engineer beginning, succeeds in imposing his model of the viaduct of Nézèrunce while in competition vis-a-vis being tested much than him. It was consolidated thereafter by the great number of bridges and works of art carried out successfully by gadzarts.

  • the traditions and the folklore gadzaric influenced many other groups of students, one can find of them traces in ENI S, the blouses of UTBM.

Promotions

Promotions are indicated by:
  • the name of the center from which promotion comes,
  • the year of integration at the school which one withdraws the figure of the hundreds.

For example, the pupils having integrated the school in 1997 into Cluny form promotion Cluny 197 or Cl197 ; those of 2002 entered with Châlons form promotion Ch202 .

Since the end of the year 1940, there are no more promotions in the center of Paris.

Certain promotions also choose a name of association different from their usual designation.

Lastly, all confused centers , promotions are also baptized by the company of the former students of the name of famous Gadzarts. For example, promotions 1982 have as a Christian name Louis Delage .
