Gabriele Veneziano

Gabriele Veneziano (1942 with Florence, Italy -) is a physicist Italy N.

Co-inventor of the Theory of the cords, Gabriele Veneziano is currently professor with the division of theoretical Physique of CERN since 1976. Member of the Accademia dei Lincei, Member of the delle Accademia Scienze and the Academy of Science with the statute of associated foreigner , obtained the Prix Pomeranchuk, the Prix D. Heinemann of the APS and recently the Prix Fermi of the SIF. He is also the prize winner 2006 of prestigious the Médaille Albert Einstein delivered by the Société Albert Einstein and in 2007 of the Medal Oskar Klein given after having delivered in Stockholm the annual conference in memoriam . He gave his inaugural lesson to the Collège de France, the February 17th 2005.

The inaugural lesson

Gabriele Veneziano started by establishing what it names space of the theories formed of 3 axes, one carries G (constant of gravitation), the second 1/c (opposite speed of light), last H (Planck's constant) by inviting each one with the Expérience of thought consisting in changing the values of these constants. As follows:

For G=0, 1/c = 0 and H = 0 one is in mechanical galiléenne , that for example of the billiard balls on a billiard table;
For G>0, 1/c = 0 and H = 0, one is in mechanical Newtonian ;
For G=0, 1/c > 0 and H = 0, one is in restricted relativity ;
For G>0, 1/c > 0 and H = 0, one is in general relativity ;
For G=0, 1/c = 0 and H > 0, one is in mechanical quantum ;
For G=0, 1/c > 0 and H > 0, one is in mechanical quantum relativist

The goal is of course to arrive to a theory where one will be able to take into account the three values G, 1/c and H like nonnull and to look at what results from it for each universe corresponding, in particular ours for the values that we measure of these three parameters.

In this inaugural lesson, Veneziano insists on the fact that majority of the Singularité S envisaged during the ages by physical models (catastrophe of the ultra-violet, instability of the Bohr atom…) disappeared, a broad part of them having been eliminated by the quantum Mécanique. Both Singularity S consisted the Big bang and the black holes, where this quantum mechanics is not taken into account, could possibly, according to him, to see itself in their turn eliminated by more complete theories.
