Biography
His/her father was a rich person landowner, who was a time mayor of Pescara; born Francesco Rapagnetta, it made add " D' Annunzio" with its name. Gabriele is pupil with the Cicognini college, with Prato, in Toscane. In the sixteen years age, it publishes its first poetic collection, entitled Primo Vere (1879); it is influenced by the barbarian Odi of Giosuè Carducci, but also the poet Lorenzo Stecchetti, then with the mode for its work Postuma . In 1881, it enters to the university Sapienza, Rome, where it enters various literary circles, of which Cronanca Bizantina , and written articles of literary criticism for the local press.
It is there that it publishes Canto Nuovo (1882), Terra Vergine (1882), Intermezzo di Rime (1883), It Libro delle Vergini (1884) and the majority of the news which was then collected under the title San Pantaleone (1886). The literary critic very quickly sees in him a child prodigy. Its first novel, It Piacere ( the Pleasure ), published in 1889, is followed in 1891 by the Innocent one (translated into French under the title the Intruder , then Innocent the ) and Giovanni Episcopo in 1892. These three novels make a strong impression on the public. Innocent the , translated into French by Georges Herelle, is encensé by foreign literary criticisms.
He had married in 1883 Maria Hardouin di Gallese, but they divorce in 1891. D' Annunzio begins three years later a tumultuous connection with the actress Eleonora Duse, whom it makes play in her parts, in particular Città morta ( the Dead city, 1898) and Francesca da Rimini (1901); they break in 1910. In 1897, he is elected with the House of Commons for a three years mandate. He sits there among the independent ones. In 1910, sifted debts, it must flee in France to escape its creditors. Over there, he collaborates with Claude Debussy for the martyrdom of Saint Sebastien (1911), written for Ida Rubinstein.
Shortly after the release of the First World War, it turns over to Italy, and made many public speeches in favor of the entry in war of Italy in the allied camp. D' Annunzio voluntarily engages in aviation, and loses the use of an eye in an accident of vol. In February 1918, it takes part in a raid on the port of Bakar, to raise moral Italians, with low after the disaster of Caporetto. August 9th, 1918, with the head of the 87e fighter squadron, it accomplishes a flight of more than thousand kilometers to release above Vienna the leaflets which said:
-
“Viennese!
-
Learn how to know the Italians. We fly above Vienna, we could release tons of bombs. We launch you only one tricolor safety: three colors of freedom. We other Italians do not make the war with the children, the old men and the women. We make the war with your government, enemy of the freedom of the nations, with your blind government, stubborn and cruel, which manages to give you neither peace, nor the bread, and nourishes you hatred and illusions. Viennese! You are famous being intelligent. But why thus you covered the Prussian uniform? You see it, from now on everyone is against you. You want to continue the war? Continue, it is to it your suicide. What do you expect some? The decisive victory which do promise the Prussian generals? Their decisive victory, it is like the bread in Ukraine: one dies while waiting for it. ”
The First World War reinforces its nationalist ideas and irredentists, and it makes countryside openly so that Italy becomes a European power of foreground. Adventurer, it seizes in particular the town of Rijeka ( Fiume in Italian) which it offered at the Italian State, driving out the allied troops of occupation (French, Americans and British). Upset refusal of Rome, it founds there the Italian Régence of Carnaro in 1920 with his comrade revolutionary trade unionist Alceste De Ambris. Fiume is transitorily recognized with the Traité of Rapallo (1920), then D' Annunzio declares the war in Italy, before the city should not go in December 1920, after a bombardment of the Italian Navy.
After the business of Fiume, it is withdrawn in its house of the Lake Garda and spends its last years to be written. Though it had a notable influence on the ideology mussolinienne, it was never directly implied in the fascistic government with the capacity starting from 1923. It is created prince de Monte Nevoso in 1924, and is named president of the Italian royal Academy in 1937. Basically anti-nazi and hating Hitler, it will oppose the bringing together of Italy with the Nazi Germany. Mussolini however grants national funeral to him after its death, which has occurred on March 1st, 1938 following a brain hemorrhage, in Gardone Riviera.
