Gabriel the Loire

Gabriel the Loire (1904 - 1996) is a French artist. He is known for the very many stained glasses which he carried out throughout the world.

Biography

He carried out his studies with Angers. In 1926, it comes to settle with Chartres where it will work in the Lorin workshops. It founds in 1946 its own workshops in this same city. The Loire workshops are always in activity.

It as well uses the traditional technique with the Plomb as of modern technologies using the concrete as it studied near the movement Bauhaus. Its work is considerable. It installed for example stained glasses in approximately 450 buildings in France, 25 in Great Britain, 18 in Germany etc

  • Notre-Dame Church with the candle with Épinal (1958 with 1959, technique used: pave): series of stained glasses of an entire surface of 668 m ² whose principal part is of a surface of 180 m ² of only one holding. This stained glass representing the life of the Virgin Mary.

  • Holy Church Walburge with Xertigny (1951 with 1952) 8 bays (surfaces total 64 m ², technique used: lead) representing the saints of the area of the Vosges (Jeanne d' Arc, Saint Pierre Fourier, Holy Romary, Holy Arnould, Holy Heart, Holy LED, Holy Guerin, Holy Blaise). The stained glasses were installed during the rebuilding of the church which was destroyed by a fire during the German offensive in 1940. The artist represented, the church on fire on the stained glass of Jeanne d' Arc. Flames of roughing-hew of the virgin mixing with the flames with the church. He also realized, the way of cross (stone) and the pieces of furniture.

  • Church Notre-Dame de Pitié with Kervignac: Work is made up of 106 1,30 height m panels by 0,60 m broad which report the life of the Virgin Mary and Christ.

  • Church Martin Saint with Marck-in-Calaisis: stained glasses of glass and concrete, in an abstracted style, 84 panels placed around the vault, inspired by the topic of the division of the coat of Saint Martin (hot on a side and cold colors of the other), and 14 panels representing the stations of the Way of Cross, each station being illustrated in a sybolic way. The assembly was done in Lèves in its workshops, and posed in Marck in June 1962.

  • Church commemorative of the emperor Guillaume 1 {{er}} (Kaiser Wilhem Gedachtniskirche) with Berlin (1960 to 1963): entire surface of 2183 m ², technique: pave.

  • Convent of the Holy-Cross with Püttlingen (the Saar), conceived by the Hungarian architect Lehoczky, it is the only monastery of rédemptoristines in Germany.

Great Britain

  • Cathedral of Salisbury, vault of the trinity (1980, technical: lead): the stained glass of a surface of 34 m ² is dedicated to the prisoner of conscience.

Japan

  • Museum of modern art of Hakone (1973), tower of the symphony (technical: pave, entire surface: 336 m ²).

the United States

  • Cathedral Grace to San Francisco (1967) (Technical: pave, 25 bays, entire surface of 170 m ²)

Chile

  • Basilica Notre-Dame de Lourdes with Santiago of Chile (completion: 1960): 50 bays (technique: pave, entire surface: 652 m ², partial restoration by J.Loire in 1988). It also carried out several mural mosaics and the way of cross (1952)
