Biography

Formed by his father, professor with the College Malherbe and organist of the Saint-Etienne church of his birthplace, it continues at fifteen years its studies with the Conservatoire of music and declamation where it studies the harmony with Taudou, the counterpoint with André Gédalge and the composition with Massenet. In 1895 raises of Guilmant (organ) and in 1897-1903 the composition with Charles-Marie Widor.

His/her brothers will make an artistic career: Maurice, librarian of the Guimet Museum, as orientalist and literary man; Robert (1874-1949), landscape designer of the Sarthe and Brittany and official painter of the town halls of Paris, of which the Town hall.

While carrying out its military service, it prepares at the price of Rome in 1901. It carries the second price, behind André Caplet and in front of Ravel. Prize winner of the Sonzogno contest for the composition of the opera Will pull up It which gains a notorious success in Scala, then with the National theater of the Op3era Comique (1905). Pianist, it in particular composed the second cycle of ten parts for the piano the House in the dunes (1908-1909), created on June 3rd, 1910 by Mr. Dumesnil, Salle Pleyel. He created three more operas: Lime (1909), Breton melodrama according to Jean Richepin, the Joke of the vat (1911) and finally Antar (1912-14), posthumous creation with the National theater of the Opera in March 1921), with imposing and black exoticism.

He died of tuberculosis at the evening of the August 1914 in Vesinet. The monument on its tomb is always visible with the cemetery of the city.

Created, Pleyel Room on June 3rd, 1910 (Maurice Dumesnil).

1911 . the Joke of the Vat , created with the Theater of the Currency in Brussels (March 21st, 1912).

1914 . Antar , completed right before its death. Presented in 1921 to the Opera of Paris, taken again in 1946.
