Gabriel Bouvery
Gabriel Bouvery (1540-1572): the bishop Gabriel Bouvery was the guide of the priests angevins and vice-chancellors of the parish churches of the Diocèse of Angers.
Gabriel Bouvery becomes the successor of the bishop Jean Olivier, dead on April 12th 1540.
The royal capacity, in the person of François 1st will seize the occasion to intervene in a vigorous way near the chapter of the cathedral of Angers in order to impose the nomination of Gabriel Bouvery. Whereas the ideas of the Réforme start to be spread in France, François Ier keeps a rather tolerant attitude initially, under the influence of his sister Marguerite de Navarre, carried on the Évangélisme, without rupture with the Church Catholique. Occurs in October 1534 unhappy the Affaire of the Wall cupboards, in which François Ier will consider the authority royal ridiculed and which in reaction started the process of persecution of the Protesting S and the starter of the wars of religion in France.
Gabriel Bouvery is the nephew of a Large Chancellor, near to the King, Guillaume Poyet. this last is the son of a Mayor of Angers Pierre Poyet. For monarchy it is a question of better controlling the powerful institution which was then the Church.
The bishop of Angers, Gabriel Bouvery, endeavors to implement the decisions of the Concile of Thirty.
In 1560, Charles IX becomes king de France. The War of religion beats full sound. The peace and finally signed between Cop and Catherine de Médicis in Longjumeau on March 23rd 1568, confirmed by the Peace of Saint-Germain-in-Bush hammer in 1570.
The bishop Gabriel Bouvery sets up a " league angevine" catholic.
In August 1572, takes place an attack against one of the chiefs of the party of the huguenots, Gaspard de Coligny. Fearing a rising, and after having listened to the councils of its mother Catherine de Médicis, Charles IX decides the elimination of the Protestant chiefs, except for the princes of blood, Henri de Navarre (future Henri IV) and the prince de Condé.
As of August 1572, the governor of Anjou, Puygaillard, then with Paris, is seen ordering to organize a St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre with Saumur and Angers. Its right-hand man in the province is Jean de Chambes, baron of Montsoreau, a fanatic catholic, chapter by his sister, moniale with Fontevraud. He had pointed out himself by his energy and his cruelty during the preceding wars and had obtained in reward the government of Saumur. Pitiless, Jean de Chambes continues to make reign terror in the area. The reformed church of Saumur is almost destroyed. Charles IX ends up recalling its governor to the order on September 14th: “ I request from you very expressly that you have incontinant, not only not to continue, and put an end to such exactions and violences ”.
The same year, Gabriel Bouvery dies. It is replaced by évèque the Guillaume Ruzé (1572-1587) évèque of Malo Saint of 1570-1572 and confessor of kings de France.
