Gabriel-Alphonse Desjardins

Gabriel-Alphonse Desjardins (November 5th 1854 - October 31st 1920) was born with Lévis (Quebec). Following his commercial studies with the College of Lévis and the military academy of Quebec between 1864 and 1870 (he also undertook a year of Latin class), Alphonse Desjardins initially undertook short a two years military career (1869-1871) in the 17th voluntary battalion of militia of Lévis and took part then in a military forwarding with the River-Red organized by the Canadian government. Of return to Lévis, it begins a career of journalist with the Echo of Lévis under the orders of Isidore-Christmas Belleau, of 1872 to 1876. Thereafter, Desjardins continues its career with the Canadian, newspaper established in Quebec. After three years, Desjardins gives up journalism to turn to the trade of editor of the debates to the legislative Parliament of Quebec. After 11 years at this station (we are then in 1889), Desjardins learns that the government of Honore Mercier will cease subsidizing the publication of the debates. A controversy entour this badly known episode of the life of the founder of the popular cases. Assumptions, however extremely doubtful as Pierre Poulin mentions it, tend towards an argument between Mercier and Desjardins. It is, to date, impossible to know which is the true reason of the job loss of Desjardins.

Old of 35, Desjardins takes again the feather and founds, in Lévis, on July 9th, 1891, the newspaper the Canadian Union , which known an existence of only 3 months. But the implication of Desjardins near the Conservative party will allow him, on April 22nd, 1892, to enter to the House of Commons as French shorthand writer to the Canadian Parliament. This employment, it will preserve it until 1917, at the moment when it takes its retirement for health reasons: Mr. Desjardins is then reached of an incurable evil uraemia. This same disease will be right of him later 3 years. He dies on October 31st, 1920, 6 days before his 66e birthday. He is entitled to D `imposing funeral, to which many representatives of the Church and governments of Quebec and Canada assist. He will be buried on November 4th in the cemetery of Lévis.

In 1897, it became worried with the problem of the wear and undertook three years of careful research and correspondence with the founders of the European movements of saving and credit in co-operative. Among these founders, we can name Italian Luigi Luzzatti, German Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen and Hermann Schulze Delitzsch and English Henry W. Wolf, author of volume People' S Bank the December 6th 1900, him and his wife Marie-Clara Dorimène Roy-Desjardins, founded together the first popular case in North America (the popular Case of Lévis) with Lévis which opened its doors on January 23rd 1901. This first case is at the origin of the Movement of the popular Caisses Desjardins, the greatest financial group co-operative in Canada. Of alive sound, Alphonse Desjardins will take part in the foundation of 163 cases, including 18 in Ontario and 9 in the United States.
