Gaafar Nimeiry

The General Gaafar Mohammed Nimeiry (in Arab Language: جعفرمحمدالنميري; born on January 1st 1930) was a Sudanese officer and politician.

It was Prime Minister (October 28th 1969 - August 11th 1976 and September 10th 1977 - April 6th 1985) and the 5th President of the Republic of the Sudan of 1971 with 1985.

Policy

In 1969, it becomes Prime Minister in the government of Ismail Al-Azhari.

In 1971, an attempt at communist Coup d'etat fails.

In 1972, with Addis Ababa, in Ethiopia, the Paix is signed between the Sudanese government and the rebels of the Southern Sudan (17 years of war; 500.000 dead ) which obtains a self government.

Alliance with the islamist ones (1981 - 1985)

In 1981, it signs a Alliance with the Muslim brothers.

In 1983, It imposes the Charia in all the country and suspends the Autonomie of Sudan Méridionale, which involves the release of a news Civil war in the South-Sudan (cease fire in 2003; + of 1.900.000 dead ), mainly populated Blacks Christian animists and (whereas the North of the country is populated by Arab populations and Moslem).

Fall

It is reversed the April 6th 1985 by a Coup d'etat directed by the General Souwar AD-Dahab. Nimeiry leaves in exile in Egypt 1985 to 1999, and returns then to Sudan.
