In 1993, the standard of Unicode 1.1 was published, including/understanding 20.902 characters used in China, Taiwan, with the Japan and in Korea. After this, the government of RPC published GB13000.1-93, a national standard ( GuoBiao ) equivalent with Unicode 1.1.GBK was defined in 1993 like an extension GB2312 -80, while including the characters of GB13000.1-93 from the occupation of the points of code unutilised available in GB 2312. Consequently, GBK is with upward compatibility with GB 2312.
Microsoft has implemented GBK in its system Windows 95 as a page of code 936, under the name CP936 . Although GBK had never been an official standard, the popularity of Windows made GBK a de facto standard and remains still much used. While GBK included all the Chinese characters defined in Unicode 1.1 and GB13000.1-93, these standards employed various tables of code. The reason first of its existence was simply to establish the bond between GB2312-80 and GB13000.1-93. The version of Microsoft counts 21.003 sinogrammes and 892 symbols against respectively 6763 and 682 for GB 2312.
The standard GB18030 -2000, published in 2000 and supplanting GBK officially, however maintains an upward compatibility with GBK, except for some characters, in particular the sign Euro.
