Gümüşhane

Prefecture of the east of the Turkey, Gümüşhane exists since the Byzantine time. Ruins of the old city are visible with a few kilometers of the current city.

Known then under the name of Argyropolis (Greek: “argyros” = money and “polished” = city) the city of the money (Ag.), the Turkish name of the city takes again this denomination, Gümüşhane meaning the place of the money.

The city is located in a narrow valley crossed by a river: Harsit. The department counts 186  953 inhabitants of which 109  383 alive in rural environment and working in the Agriculture.

The surface of the department is of 6  574  999  986,6 Mr. It is located in a mountainous region which presents various centers of interest: rupestral ski, rafting, churches (Siran), cascade of Tomara (Siran), cave of Karaca (Gümüşhane), ruins of fortresses (Gümüşhane), ruins of an aqueduct (Kelkit)…
