Génicourt

Génicourt is a common French, located in the department of the Val-d'Oise and the area Île-de-France, on a vast agricultural plain. Its inhabitants is called Génicourtois (be).

Geography

The village is located on the agricultural plate of the French Vexin, in the north of the agglomeration of Cergy-Pontoise, with 40 kilometers in the North-West of Paris.

Etymology

The name of the village would come from Germanic the Gising and Latin cortem (field). However, another possibility, more logical, resides in these two words: Genus Curtus , which would mean “short kind”, “which generates little”, because the number of inhabitant of Génicourt remained stable very a long time.

History

It is difficult to determine since when the territory of Génicourt is inhabited, and this because of a lack of serious documents. cut and polished Silex nevertheless were found in the surrounding fields the village.

Génicourt was always an important camping, crossing point even for the enemy troops which moved towards Pontoise or Paris with 15th and 16th century. The “castle” of Génicourt, saw more or less important personalities taking turns with its door, like Nicolas de Brullard in 1605, sior of Sillery, Viscount of Puiseux, advising of the King and Seigneur of Génicourt, Gérocourt and Marines; or his/her son, Pierre de Sillery, who had to negotiate the marriage of Louis XIII with Anne of Austria.

In 1691, the village passes from the election of Gisors to that of Pontoise, like many other parishes. At that time, Génicourt is a prosperous agricultural village which supplies the mill of cereal Pontoise. June 24th 1840, Gérocourt is attached to Génicourt, which increases the population of the commune of 30%.

Génicourt made its great strides especially at the beginning of the 20th century, where the craft industry was relatively developed. One then found there farmers, one marshal-shoeing, a wet cooper, a cartwright, a carpenter and a mason. The farm of Gérocourt had even its distilling and transformed beets into alcohol. One could see a small marketing activity also there, with two bars, a grocer, a tobacco shop and a milk merchant. The other tradesmen (baker, butcher, porkbutcher and fishmonger) were peddlers.

Sites and Monuments

The current church goes back only to 1905. Indeed, there existed an old church hitherto dating from the 12th century and dedicated to Pierre saint, with Nef, rectangular chorus, Transept narrower than the central vessel and two spans forming two side chapels. But the lack of maintenance caused disorders in the roof and the walls of this building, and the Municipal council unanimously decided his destruction in 1904. Today, there remains old church only the porch of entry, classified historic building, like various elements such as a baptismal statues, tomb stone, funds (15th or 16th century), the Cloche S, etc

The vault of Gérocourt is a private property (become communal property in 1993) built in 1856 to replace an old church of which there does not remain any trace. It is dedicated to Our-Lady-of-Snows and contains a statue of the Virgin to the Child (XVIe century) who undoubtedly comes from the old church.

The White House date of the 18th century. This old relay of station was regarded as variation of Génicourt and is next to what was a time the workshop of marshal-shoeing.

One can also note the presence of old farms of which that of Gérocourt dating from the 19th century and various other objects.
