Gélon

Gélon , born towards 540, died in 478, was the Tyran of Géla then of Syracuse in Greek Sicily.

Ordering cavalry under the tyrant of Froze, Hippocrates, it became the tutor of his sons towards 490, but usurped then tyranny for its own account.

In 485, it seized Syracuse and its capacity as well as the populations transferred to it from the cities to the neighborhoods of Syracuse, letting his/her brother Hiéron order Géla. A little later in 483 or 481, it destroyed Megara Hyblaea, Greek colony near to Syracuse and annexed its territory.

Under its tyranny, Syracuse became the dominant Hellenic power of the time; the Greeks of the large ground sought his assistance against the Perse, but desisted when it posed as condition which it would receive the supreme command.

Combined with Théron, tyrant of Acragas (Agrigente), it beat with Himère, in 480, a great Carthaginian forwarding , according to the tradition, the very same day where the Greeks beat Persians with Salamine.

He died two years later.
