Gâtine
The Gâtine is the name given to two areas of the West of France.
The tourangelle Gâtine occupies the north of the department of Indre-et-Loire.
The Vendean Gâtine is the name given to a region of the Poitou, in the center of the current department of the Two-Sevres. It corresponds roughly to the current district of Parthenay.
A Country of Gâtine (within the meaning of the Law Voynet) was also made up. In opposition to the Plain (country of Niort and Saint-Maixent), Gâtine is an area more undulating and of the woodlands.
The word gâtine means “spoiled ground” because, with the top Moyen-âge, the area poor, was populated little and with the variation of the main roads.
