Gâtinais

The French Gâtinais is a province of France whose exact extent is prone to discussions without end.

Origin of the name

" Gâtinais" from the name of old the Roman Pagus " is resulting; Vastinensis".

Presentation

The various authors agree in general on the fact that the part called by convenience Gâtinais orléanais would correspond roughly speaking to old the Arrondissement of Montargis and a notable fraction of the Arrondissement of Pithiviers, in the department of the Loiret, while the part known as French Gâtinais would correspond to the Arrondissement of Fontainebleau in the department of Seine-et-Marne.

A considerable part of the Department of the Essonne, in the south, around Stamps, is also asserted like belonging to Gâtinais, while certain authors regard many communes of the North-West of the Département of Yonne (Puisaye and all this concerned the Archevêché of Direction in the west of the Yonne river) as also forming part of Gâtinais.

The historical capital of Gâtinais, until creation of the governments, was Castle-Landon. Thereafter, the two “capitals” became Montargis (for the Gâtinais orléanais ) and Nemours (for the French Gâtinais ).

For all the franque period, Gâtinais corresponded to the one of the cing pagi concerning archbishop's palace of Sens, namely the pagus Wastinensis (or Vastinensis ).

A point not disputed is the central character of the valley of the Loing in Gâtinais. A fictitious circle of 40 km radius, whose center would be the bell-tower of the Notre-Dame church of Castle-Landon, would also include, essentially, the grounds known as gâtinaises.

Currently, the tourist slogan from “both Gâtinais” despizes territorial divisions: “Gâtinais, between the Seine and the Loire” .

It is about a primarily agricultural area, between Brie and Beauce. It is famous for its saffron and its Miel.
