History

Fusiliers of Sherbrooke

At the end of the XIXe century the companies of Milice of Quebec were still present in the cities and villages of many Cantons. The first regiment originating in Sherbrooke was formed in 1867. But, it is in 1910 qu' a French Canadian regiment is organized. Founded by Doctor J. Ferdinand Rioux, the 54e regiment of the Police officers of Sherbrooke was ordered by Doctor Pantaléon Pelletier at the time of the official authorization.

In 1914, the 54e regiment offers its services in the defense of England following the declaration of war to Germany, on August 4th. The 54e Régiment involved and provided approximately 900 men for the active service within other units of the Canadian Task force. Because of its contribution to the effort of war which was worthy of mention, it withdrew from it the honor of war of the battle with Amiens.

In 1940, at the time of the Second world war, the formation of a regular regiment composy, “ The Sherbrooke Fusilier Regiment ”, a fusion of two regiments of militiamans, comes to reinforce the Canadian troops of overseas and constitutes by the fact even the first bilingual regiment of Canada. It is only later that this unit is sent in on the continent of Europe in the capacity as combat unit. Sherbrooke Fusilier Regiment unloads in Normandy on the head of bridge established in sector Canadian English to fight the first battle of tanks on the ground of France. The members of this regiment led the first tanks Canadian in the town of Caen and the first to to make irruption in Falaise. One grants to their credit approximately a hundred and fifteen German tanks put out of combat. The following honors are reproduced on the regimental flag: the unloading of Normandy, Authie, Caen, peak of Bourguébus, Cliff, the Scheldt, the Rhineland, Xanten, the Rhine and Zutphen.

In 1942, the 1st Battalion of the Fusiliers of Sherbrooke of the Forces active is formed for the service with the country. After having remained in Sherbrooke, Debert (Nova Scotia) and as a Colombia-British, the 1st Battalion is sent in Great Britain in January 1945, where it was dismantled shortly after his arrival. During this time, the original unit of the Fusiliers of Sherbrooke became the 2nd Battalion of the Fusiliers of Sherbrooke (Reserve) and especially used to recruit and involve elements for the servif credit.

Since the end of the Second world war, the missions of peace of the United Nations marked the history of the Fusiliers of Sherbrooke by the participation of some their members. (Bosnia, Haiti, .......)

A monument for peace is set up in front of the military horse-gear to underline the participation of Estriens in the maintenance missions of peace.

The Horse-gear has also a military museum which establishes the link with its past and sees with the development of the Estrien inheritance. Later on, the museum wants to make a permanent exposure inside the horse-gear thus taking an active share to the development of the project of the city of the rivers. It is possible to visit it the Tuesday evening between the month September and April.

The regimental music, which had ceased its activities in the Seventies, was revived with the beginning of the year 1990 pennies the impulse of the lieutenant-colonel Pierre Véronneau, then ordering Regiment. With a manpower with the very restricted departure, lieutenant Serge Bélanger, first musical director of this music, provided the foundations of what it is today.

In 1996, the captain Sylvain Side taken direction of this music which now makes the pride of its regiment and the Sherbrookoise community. It counts today more than one about thirty musicians of the area. The majority are students, in music like in others disciplines.
