Furoshiki

The furoshiki () is a kind of envelope Japan traditional ease out of fabric used to transport clothing, gifts, the Bentō … Its existence probably goes back to the era Nara and its older representation, showing it like a package to transport clothing on the head, dates from the era Heian. The name, meaning “to spread out (something) with the bath” ((), furo nor shiku (mono) ), comes from the era Edo where one used the furoshiki to take along the businesses necessary or to pack up clothing with the public baths (, Sentō ). Before being associated with this last, the furoshiki was called hirazutsumi (, “package flat”). Before this time, at the end of the era Muromachi, the Daimyō extended it to pose their business before taking their bath or to wipe their feet. It is possible that the use of the furoshiki extended like means of transport, of protection and decoration for the products of the merchants.

There exists in many ways to fold and tie learnedly fabric around the object to be offered or with to pack:

  • Bin-zutsumi, for two bottles

  • Hikkake-zutsumi, a lengthened box
  • Hirazutsumi, for a square or rectangular box
  • Kakushi-zutsumi, for a square or rectangular box, node hidden
  • Maki-zutsumi, for long and cylindrical object
  • Otsukai-zutsumi, for a square or rectangular box, apparent node
  • Suika-zutsumi, for a round object
  • etc

The current furoshiki can be realized in many fabrics, like the Soie, the Coton, the Viscose or the Nylon. They are often decorated with traditional reasons or by Shibori or Chirimen and measure between 75 and 120 cm on side.

Since the post-war period, the furoshiki fell gently in disuse to Japan, mainly since the appearance of the Plastic bag. However, in a concern Environment Al, the Department of the Environment and Japanese ecological associations try to give them in vogue. That will allow, hope for it, with this beautiful tradition of perdurer.
