Furnas (Portugal)

Furnas is a locality of the commune of Povoação, on the island of São Miguel with the the Azores. Its surface is of 33,88 km ² for 1.541 inhabitants (2001). Density: 45,5 h/km ².

The place is known to shelter various spectacular demonstrations of volcanicity:

  • in Lagoa das Furnas, a zone of fumerolles and extreme mud sands is located at the northern end of the lake. One prepares there a local speciality, the Cozido , a Pot-au-feu of chicken.

  • at the village of Furnas, about thirty hot sources, temperature and chemical composition different.
  • a warm water river, coloured Iron, and a cool water confleunt river in the city.
  • of the Geyser S located in small smoking basins produces water rich in sodium bicarbonate, boron, fluorine and releases of carbonic gas. The inhabitants cook corn ears there.
  • of the installations of Thermalisme is located in a park arranged at XIVère century.
