Furnas (Portugal)

Furnas is a locality of the commune of Povoação, on the island of São Miguel with the the Azores. Its surface is of 33,88 km ² for 1.541 inhabitants (2001). Density: 45,5 h/km ².

The place is known to shelter various spectacular demonstrations of volcanicity:

in Lagoa das Furnas, a zone of fumerolles and extreme mud sands is located at the northern end of the lake. One prepares there a local speciality, the Cozido , a Pot-au-feu of chicken.
at the village of Furnas, about thirty hot sources, temperature and chemical composition different.
a warm water river, coloured Iron, and a cool water confleunt river in the city.
of the Geyser S located in small smoking basins produces water rich in sodium bicarbonate, boron, fluorine and releases of carbonic gas. The inhabitants cook corn ears there.
of the installations of Thermalisme is located in a park arranged at XIVère century.
