Fundamental Katalog

The Fundamental Katalog ( Fundamentalkatalog or FK for " catalog fondamental") is a Catalog of stars published for the first time in 1879. He met the need to have a catalog for reference to more easily measure the position of certain astronomical objects. In the beginning, he proposed stars of reference uniformly distributed in the sky in order to help with the realization of the Catalog AGK ( Astronomische Gesellschaft Katalog either Catalog of the Company of Astronomy in German). It is thus a astrometrical Catalog.

The stars referred in Fundamental Katalog were selected according to their magnitude, this one having to be sufficiently important so that the star is easily distingable in an instrument. The catalog since regularly is packed and updated to take account of the own Mouvement star S.

The first version of the catalog (noted at the time FK and now FK1) comprised 539 stars, of variation higher than -10°. The second edition, at the time called Neuer Fundamentalkatalog (either " new catalog"), now FK2, date of 1907 and consisted of the star addition to cover all the sky, the full number of stars being then of 925. The third edition ( Dritter Fundamentalkatalog , or FK3) date of 1937. It includes/understands nothing any more but 873 of them (52 having been removed back issue), to which were added 662 stars in a supplement published the following year. Fourth edition (FK4), left in 1963 takes again the 1  535 stars of the FK3 and its supplement. Two years later a supplement with the FK4 was published, with 1  111 stars. Fifth edition (FK5) date of 1988 and always comprises 1  535 stars. The supplement, published in 1991 comprises 3  however of it; 115. Lastly, the last edition to date (2005) date of 2000 (FK6). 1  535 stars of editions FK3 with FK5 have a magnitude not exceeding 7,5.

The stars of catalog FK5 are noted in the form " FK5 nnnn". There exist 873 references among the numbers going from 1 to 925 (reminiscence of removed stars of the FK2) and 662 references between 1001 and 1670: the classification of the supplement of the FK3 started at 1000 but 8 references were never published. The references of the supplement of the FK5 have numbers ranging between 2003 and 6125.

Fundamental Katalog includes/understands the data of Right ascension and variation of stars of reference, in coordinates J2000.0 and B1950.0 as well as the exact references of the time when measurement was taken (in order to take into account the own movement in the most precise way). It also includes/understands the data of own Mouvement, Parallaxe, the spectral Type and the radial Speed. The correspondence with designations of other catalogs (AGK, Bonner Durchmusterung, HD, Boss and SRS) is also given if necessary.

Fundamental Katalog for a few years has been supplanted by the Catalog Hipparcos.
