History
The history of the old town of Fumel merges with that of sound castle which right from the start (the lords of Fumel appear in the texts at the end of XIe century) ordered the passage of the valley of the Batch, which made a very disputed place of it.
With the XIIIe century, Fumel is a prosperous small town equipped with a charter of franknesses and habits (1265) which governs the economy, the right and morals. This boom was despite everything one period of disorders, the area being disputed by English and French. As of 1280, the Seigneur of Fumel pays homage to the King d' Angleterre and the Seigneurie of Fumel will remain until in 1414 with the hands of English. From this date and until in 1442, the city will pass alternatively from the English to the French and each time, the castle and Fumélois has to undergo the maltreatment of the change in particular at the time of the raids organized by the Mercenaire S of Rodrigue de Villandrando.
The Château of Fumel will be raised of its ruins towards 1468. The city, inserted in the enclosing walls external of the castle, is with the narrow one. It has for a long time a church (St-Antoine), a market with corns, a great public place: Postel, but the houses pile up and have of another resource to only rise, the majority have two stages; with the XVIe century, some dwellings are established out of the walls, in the axis of the door belfry: it is the birth of a district: Barris. But this expansion and the organization of the city will be contained a long time by the provisions taken after the murder of a lord of Fumel.
The period of the Wars of religion, pretext with good number of settlings of score, Fumel will be marked violent one confrontations between the inhabitants of the city and François de Fumel, their lord. 1500 to 2000 people of which much come from other cities invests the castle and the morning of April 24th 1561, François de Fumel, Capitaine of the Guards of the king, Ambassadeur of Henri II of Constantinople, are killed. In April 1562, the repression led by Blaise de Montluc is bloody, pitiless and ruinous. The abrogation of all the privileges contained in the charter of the franknesses and habits carries a great blow to the city. From now on, the economic and social organization of the city falls because of abrogation in a state from total dependence with respect to the lord. This situation of the condemned city, reduced to the skimped limits of its old enclosure, lasted until in 1789.
Since the XVIIIe century, two Gone S each week (Tuesday and Friday, like today still), and sixteen Fair S in the year, animated this rural small town which had moreover an marketing activity with its three port S: the port of the Passage to South-west, that of Libos in the West, and that of Condat in the East. One dispatched by inland waterway towards Bordeaux the Papier manufactured in the Papeterie S of the Lède, the Lémance and the Thèze, including one certain quality called to the " Weapons of Amsterdam" was intended for the Holland; one dispatched also part of the production of the forging mills established in the same valleys, in particular the boilers for the Raffinage of the Cane sugar, which of Bordeaux left for the Martinique, Saint-Domingue or the Guadeloupe. The three ports also left the stone facings coming from the careers from Condat as well as the Blé S and the Châtaigne S from the back country. The revolutionary period abolishing the drastic measures weighing on the inhabitants since the XVIe century, opens one new era of hope. Fumel takes an administrative importance, it is chief town of canton since 1790.
The population of common more than doubled: 1034 inhabitants in 1806,2348 in 1834. In 1845, a suspended bridge is carried out in order to facilitate circulation between Fumel and the plain of Montayral. Other projects are concluded: a cemetery (1843), an elementary school (open in 1865), a presbytery and a new church (construction began in 1865)
The FACTORY
The city took really its rise only after 1847, date on which the iron-foundry will settle at the edge of the Batch. This installation with Fumel does not owe anything with the preexistent infrastructure dating from the XVe century, it was created according to the future line of Railroad of the department, in an area where the exploitation with open sky of the Iron ore was interesting.
Later, the factory will specialize in the manufacture of Tuyau X which was delocalized in Spain in the Eighties, it was the beginning of change of owners then of name, in 1988, it becomes the Aquitanian Company of Automobile Foundry (SADEFA).
