Fullmetal alchemist

Fullmetal alchemist , of its original title Hagane No renkin jutsushi ( 鋼の錬金術師 which means “the steel alchemist”, shortened in hagaren ) in Japanese, is a Manga of Hiromu Arakawa from which a Anime was drawn diffused in Japan between 2003 and 2004, a film left in 2005, OAV S left in 2006 like several video games. In France the series was diffused from April in June 2005 on Canal+ (in the emission the Kaz presented by Yannick Zicot) and currently is diffused on MCA the every day with 18:25.

to conclude the series from 51 episodes, a film, “Conqueror off Shambala”, left in 2005 at Japan (to the cinema) and in October 2007 in France (DVD only)

The manga is published in Japan every month in the magazine Shōnen Gangan chapter by chapter for ensuitre to be joined together (generally by 4) in volumes connected and that since 2002. In France, the series arrived at the end of 2005 and only volumes connected are published by Kurokawa. Currently, it left 15 volumes to France (at November 8th) and 17 to Japan (at August 11th) where the series is always in hand.

These are 77 chapters which were published for the moment.

History

In a world where the Alchimie is high with the row of science, Edward Elric and his/her Alphonse brother, of one year younger than, see him very young people their father leaving without leaving of trace. They try ressusciter their mother, recently deceased of a disease, using a human transmutation (what is formally prohibited). They fail and the consequences undergo some, because alchemy, like any science, obeys inescapable laws. Thus, one can obtain something thanks to alchemy only by yielding another thing of value equalizes, it is the law of the equivalent exchange (or principle of equivalence in other translations, which could be connected with the law of conservation of the elements of our chemistry). Alphonse loses his entire body in handling and his brother Edward, his left leg. Edward succeeds in nevertheless saving Alphonse by binding his heart to an armor and by conceding its right-hand man in the operation.

Consequently, the two brothers have of cease only to find the integrality of their bodies. That which they need to arrive there is the Philosopher's stone which, according to the rumors, would have faculty to allow the alchemist who uses it to pass in addition to the law of the equivalent exchange. They could ressusciter somebody without making thus sacrifice in exchange or all kinds of human transmutation. On proposal of Roy Mustang ( the alchemist of flame ), Edward Elric then decides to pass the test of entry in the alchemists of State in order to obtain the appropriations on behalf of the army to conclude their research concerning this stone.

Comments

  • the scenarios of the manga and of animated are not exactly the same ones from the beginning but they start with really differing towards volume 6 is approximately towards episode 25. The true turning takes place with the volume 8 where new characters coming from the country of Xing appear and where the difference between the manga and animates it is clear and clear.

  • It is interesting to note that the manga was subjected to a kind of censure to the the United States, even if it is not strictly speaking a censure. Indeed, in volume 8, when Greed is found captive in the reference mark of Father before turning over from where it comes, this last is found in a position pointing out the crucifixion; in the American version, the stone on which Greed is attached was increased to form a round stone.

Characters

  • Edward Elric : It is the Fullmetal alchemist , it is thus the main character of the history. It is the youngest alchemist of State (it received its diploma at 12 years), he with the research of the philosopher stone, is accompanied by his/her little brother, Alphonse with whom he wants to find the body at all costs. It is called ED by his little brother.

  • Alphonse Elric: It is the little brother of Edward. It is often confused, wrongly, with his brother owing to the fact that it is in armor. It lost the most at the time of their attempt to bring back their mother, since it lost its body and that it is condemned to live with its heart sealed with an armor. Nevertheless its main aim is that his/her brother finds his members. It is called Al by his big brother.
  • Colonel Roy Mustang: It is the Flame Alchemist , the superior of Edward. Its goal is to go up to the high position of the State, the presidency. Although its relations with Fullmetal Alchemist is tended, it is posed truly like its guard.
  • Homonculus : Each Homonculus represents one of the seven deadly sins: greediness, the desire, lust, idleness… Moreover homonculus are not always the same characters in the manga and in animates.
  • King Bradley: It is the president of the country of Amestris. It is a frightening combatant especially because it is actually a homonculus.
  • Father : It is the creator of the homonculus and that who directs the country of Amestris through King Bradley.
  • Scar : Former monk-combatant Ishbal, he became serial killer of Alchemists of State to be avenged, in particular of dead of his brother. He is characterized by a scar in the shape of cross on the face, and by his covered arm of tattooings. (A contradiction here is noticed: indeed, Scar makes use of Alchemy to kill the alchemists)
  • Van Hohenheim: It is the father of ED et al., he left at his place whereas Al was baby. So Edward keeps only hatred and rancour for this one.
  • Trisha Elric : The mother of the Elric brothers. Died of an epidemic, they will try to bring back it to the life and the price will pay some.
  • Lieutenant Riza Hawkeye: Second of Colonel Mustang, it takes care that the latter works but especially, it takes care on him. (Its name means the eye of the Falcon )
  • Maes Hughes: Friend of Colonel Mustang and the Elric brothers, character very attaching and completely gaga his girl, it will be unfortunately made kill by Envy because it had learned some too much on the existence from the homonculus.
  • Commander Armstrong: Character very choking by his presence, Strong ARM Alchemist one of is subordinated of the Hughes Lieutenant-colonel. He will help the Elric brothers with many recoveries but, although he is soldier, it is a person who hates the army and the war.
  • Flax Yao: Originating in the country of Xing, he seeks the philosopher stone so that its people go up in the regard of his father, the Emperor of Xing.
  • Winry Rockbell : Friend of childhood of the two brothers Elric, it is also the mecanician of Edward. Set on the automails, it will end up leaving to it to settle with Rush Valley to improve in the clothes industry of automails (or matched-grefs) more powerful, to help ED of sound et al. better.

Publications

Seventeen volumes already left since the first publication to Japan (2002). The seventeenth left on August 11th, 2007. The author completed in July the eighteenth volume which will leave on December 22nd to Japan and began the nineteenth in August. In France, these are already fifteen volumes which left and sixteenth is announced for March 2008.

The world of Fullmetal alchemist

Fullmetal alchemist is held in a world similar to ours, such as it was at the beginning of the XXe century. With the notable difference that it exists a particular science there, the alchemy . Such as they are represented in this fiction, the alchemists more seem magicians equipped with spectacular capacities (deflagrations, repair, cure, metamorphoses of the environment). Indeed, even if FMA takes again some principles of alchemy, one is far from the real discipline whose author was inspired.

  • the country of Edward and Alphonse names Amestris (that probably comes from the name of the woman of Xerxes 1, king de Perse). Amestris, resembles our Europe, more particularly the Second Reich or the Empire Austro-Hungarian of before the First World War, flanked of a military regime prone to the civil wars. It is not however the reflection of any precise country, having institutions very different and a various architecture energy from the Dutch houses in Venice…

  • In the north of Amestris is Drachma , a snow-covered and aggressive country. They are in war with the amestriens. Mountains separate the two countries.

  • In the east is Xing.

  • Between Xing and Amestris is a nimbus place of mysteries: ruins of Xerxes.

Deepening of the history

  • First of all, as in the near total of the mangas with success, the history comprises elements drawn from the Bible or Greek/Japanese Mythology . One will thus see the effect of these influences on the manga.

  • the omnipresent symbol in the series is that which is registered on the chest of Izumi and the coat of Edward. This symbol resembles a caduceus and represents a snake being rolled up around a surmounted cross of wings and a crown. The snake is the symbol of Asklépios, god Greek of medicine (it was human, but succeeded in making reappear deaths, which generated the ire of Zeus and its death) which had as a girl Panacée (universal cure); all these allusions to resurrection correspond to the History. The Cross, it is also in connection with the rebirth: Christ ressuscity (but this is to be interpreted freely). Some say that the wings are those of Hermes, perhaps symbol of the many voyages of the search of the two brothers. The crown is, in alchemy, the symbol of the philosopher stone “perfect”. It is also symbol of the sin. In alchemy, the symbol of the snake and cross together represent control of what is volatile (As mercury what can have a bond with the history of Xing)

  • Léto, the god sun, bears the same name as the goddess Léto, mother of Artémis and Apollo.

  • Then, one will note the presence of the Door. This Door of knowing instantaneous represents the Original sin, the fact of all of knowing while transgressing the interdict (Edward and the human transmutation - Eve and forbidden fruit). One finds it in old alchemical texts, where they appear under the symbolic system number of 12 ( the 12 doors , of --). With these doors the 12 keys go, writes later by -- in complement with the first book. Each one of these doors represents a capacity symbolic system or mystic (). We find them in many cultures. They also represent in Japan the doors of the hell ( the Door of Rodin). The door also reappears in Shaman King inter alia.
