Fugazi

Fugazi is a group of Post-hardcore originating in Washington, D.C and formed in 1987.

The name of the group is directly resulting from the acronym used by GI, during the Guerre of Vietnam, when they were in a very bad situation - literally: “ F ucked U p, G ot has mbushed, Z ipped I N”, “Is foutu, taken in ambush, can leave more”.

Fugazi is one of the rare examples of groups which succeeded in being very known, while remaining faithful to the independent labels of recording and distribution, following the spirit of ethics DIY of the Punk. The group seldom made pay more than 5 or 10 US$ the entry in its concerts in the United States and always wanted that they are opened at all the ages. It was MacKaye, in particular, which insisted on this point, remembering to be rejected clubs during its adolescence. Fugazi also always maintained the price of its albums around 10 US$ and forever sold derivative products like tee-shirts or posters.

All the albums of the group left on Dischord Records, managed jointly by Ian MacKaye and the old beater of Minor Threat, Jeff Nelson.

History of the group

After the transitory one and influence group of hardcore Minor Threat had separated, Ian MacKaye (singer and guitarist) decided to be invested in several groups with the short existence, (in particular the group of Emo Embrace) before off forming a new trio with the beater Brendan Canty of Rites Spring and the Bassiste Joe Lally. In 1988 left their first EP: Fugazi , which contains several popular songs near the fans, of which " Waiting Room".

The group was then joined by Guy Picciotto, another old of Rites off Spring. At the beginning, Picciotto only sang but, quickly, it started to play of the guitar within the quartet.

Fugazi developed a sound experimental, single, which, later, influenced groups of Punk rock'n'roll and Grunge. He married elements of noise with an original syncopated music all while spicing it at the time of influences Reggae and Dub. Moreover, in their experimentation, the remarkable imagination of MacKaye and Picciotto, in the synchronization of their guitars, often made obsolete the traditional concept of principal guitar and guitar of accompaniment. They also incorporated, in their melodies, of the agreements and the musical progressions curiously unusual and dissonant, sometimes pointing out the musical harmony of Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd of the group Television, filtered through a sensitivity hardcore.

Usually, the words of MacKaye are more direct, and sound like anthems, with very marked slogans and refrains. Those of Picciotto are more abstract, with a more oblique approach. Lally also took part in the writing of some songs. The words of Fugazi have the characteristic to strongly stress the emotions. This style led criticisms to qualify this music of Post-hardcore or Emo, in what it is perceived like a progression and a reaction compared to the hardcore.

The career of Fugazi was told in Our Band Could Be Your Life , a Essai serious and impossible to circumvent on the American undergrounds groups. The book of Mark Andersen and Mark Jenkins, Dance off Days: Two Decades off Punk in the Nation' S Capital , treats some also lengthily, as well as career of each member of the group.

The group currently makes a “pause”, partly because Canty and Lally became fathers, and remains without certainty to meet again a day. Nevertheless, Fugazi recently left, via Internet site www.fugaziliveseries.com, a score of vidéos not-mixed. During this time, its members occupy themselves while taking part in other projects: MacKaye plays in a duet called The Evens with Amy Farina of the group The Warmers; Canty creates various original soundtracks and plays of the low in the trio Garland Of Hours. It also carries out the documentary musical ones on its label, Trixie. Lally took part in the album Disconnection Imminent of the group of Post-punk Decahedron, in addition to taking part in company of John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers in a project named Ataxia. It also left an album solo " There to here" in 2006. Picciotto, as for him, carries on mainly an activity of producer of discs.
