History
Charolais and Brionnais: a common history
The “pagus” Charolais and Brionnais are two old Bailliage S created under the reign of Saint Louis. Although according to politically of the very chaotic ways (Charolais will be confiscated with the king d' Espagne in 1684, but annexed with the crown only in 1751, depending Brionnais for certain parishes of the Parliament of Paris and Bailliage of Mâcon, and for others of the Parliament of Dijon and secondary Bailliage of Semur in Brionnais, depending him even of the principal baillage of Autun) these two small countries forged a common history where country, peasants and landscapes are strongly dependant. At the time of the revolution the baillage of Semur and the parishes mâconnaises of Brionnais integrated the District of Marcigny. This District with then joined that of Bourbon-Lancy and Charolles to form the District of Charolles.
Brionnais is currently federate with the Charolais and the Bourbonnais within the Pays Charolais Brionnais.
The barons de Semur
At the beginning of the Early middle ages, and until the beginning of the 14th century, Brionnais were the seat of powerful a baronnie, that of the barons de Semur. The origins of the family of Semur are obscure. Documents are missed. No doubt, allured by the site, a lord of passage in the area, Freelan de Chamilly, made build a feudal castle at the top of the headland of Semur, dominating and thus controlling the Loire Valley.
The baronnie developed then under the impulse of the Lords of Semur, of which some knew glory and power, such Dalmace Ier, known as Dalmace the Large one (1000? with 1048). One of its sons, Hugues - the future Holy Hugues - (1024-1109), will become large abbot of Cluny and will play a big role in all Christendom. A girl of Dalmace, Hélie, married the Duc of Burgundy Robert Ier. The fact even as a girl of the seigniory of Semur was selected for woman by one of the most powerful princes of France, and undoubtedly of Christendom, shows well that the family of Semur, at the 11th century, was considered.
During several centuries, the baronnie of Semur will know prosperity and safety. This power, the relative calm of the province brionnaise, the encouragement, the protection and the assistance brought by the family of the barons, all that can partially explain the operational startup, as of the 11th century, several churches in Brionnais. The first convent of women depending on Cluny was also founded with Marcigny. The spiritual influence of Autun, religious center important of the world of Christendom, and Cluny, which knew a radiation without precedent at the 11th century and 12th century, primarily under the authority of holy Hugues, large abbot of Cluny, also constitutes an explanation.
Let us add finally that there was the possibility of getting, on the spot, the materials necessary to the construction of the buildings. Careers, from where the beautiful yellow stone was extracted from Brionnais, are still visible today.
