Fruits Tennis shoe ( フルーツバスケット , furūtsubasuketto ) is a Manga of Natsuki Takaya.

With the Japan, " Basket" fruits; leaves by chapter in the called Japanese review: Hana to yume (花とゆめ). Thereafter the chapters leave in the form of Manga. 21 volumes left and the publication of the series is finished (chapter 136) in Hana to yume , then continues in volumes. Fruits Basket comprises 23 volumes connected.

In France, this Manga is published in the editions Akata/Delcourt. The 23 volumes already left (since November 14th, 2007). There exists also a Anime of 26 episodes based on the beginning of the manga (the first 6 volumes).

Tohru Honda is a 16 year old high-school girl who lives only under a tent after the death of her mother. She installed her tent on the property of the Sôma family. When a boy of its class, which also belongs to this family, discovers by chance that she lives under a tent, she is collected by Sôma. She starts to live in the middle of Yuki, Kyô and Shigure and learns the secrecy from the Sôma family; they are victims of a curse. They are transformed into one of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac when a person of the opposite sex intertwines them.

Characters

ATTENTION: Of very many secrecies is revealed in the following parts, it is thus disadvised reading them in the event of ignorance of the history.

Summoned (草摩)

About fifty people live inside the residence of Sôma: they know the " secret" from the twelve; the other people live outside and are unaware of some all. A heavy curse weighs on this family, allowing none the " maudits" to clasp in its arms a person of the opposite sex. If they try it nevertheless, they are transformed temporarily into an animal of the Chinese zodiac. This transformation can also be caused by other skews, like the cold or intense heat, a violent shock, a disease (influenza, cold, headaches, etc). In addition to that, deep a faintness reigns in each family member.

Yuki, the rat

Yuki (can have the significance of " neige" in Japanese) was born under the sign from the rat. It is a boy with the eyes and the fine gray hair, so beautiful which one would believe a girl (it is the female ideal several boys). It is so popular that it has its own fan club (called Fan Yuki Club, he is called there the Prince). As it is struck by the curse of Sôma and that it underwent serious traumatisms in its childhood because of Akito, it always keeps its distances with the others. Thanks to Tohru he will learn how to be more open with the others and to share his feelings. In spite of its fragile appearance, it is an expert in martial arts. He starts to tie a solid friendship with Kakeru and to feel stronger feelings for Machi, two of the members of the council of the pupils, of which he is the president, but only Tohru will succeed with really alleviating the sufferings of its heart. Kyô, which wants to enter the closed circle of the twelve Chinese signs, unceasingly tries to beat it, without success. Yuki envies Kyô because this one can bind friendship with the others more easily than him which has much more evil to do it. He sought in Tohru a mother.

Kyô, the cat

Kyô (夾) was born under the sign from the cat, it has the orange hair sharp and the red eyes. According to the legend, the cat was trapped by the rat so that it does not go to the festival organized by God, the cat thus does not form part of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac. It is to some extent the thirteenth not-official sign. Since this event, the cat and the rat cannot get along any more. Kyô does not escape this rule, he hates Yuki more than all in the world and involves himself without slackening to be able to beat it one day. He also had a difficult childhood, because his/her father reproached him the suicide of his mother. He was raised by one of his cousins Kazuma, who will become his adoptive father and who is also the professor of martial arts of the Sôma clan. Contrary to Yuki, it is integrated easily with the others. The majority of his/her classmates adore it because they like to see it putting in anger for one anything. It is also very popular in the girls. It does not support the female tears, but must put up with it because it is often on its shoulder that Tohru cries. It never strikes the girls, but it is not that which prevents it from wishing them a stay in hell or to insult them; it also has a blue fun of Saki because it thinks that it reads in him. It tries to calm the heats of Kagura, another member of the Sôma clan struck by the curse which is in love with him and which expresses it… by striking it. One will discover later that it has a reason to hate Yuki, this one is not in report/ratio with the curse, but rather compared to an event which occurred with the mother of Tohru when they were children. To the wire of time, Kyô will go obviously that it tests feelings for Tohru, which will prove to be reciprocal thereafter, but of a great complexity considering its curse. Indeed, that which is cursed by the sign of the cat is intended to be locked up with its majority, only, in a house which is intended for the “cat” since generations.

Shigure, the dog

Shigure (紫呉) is a man with the black hair. It is one of the oldest members (27 years) of the clan to being struck by the curse. It is a character very complex, difficult to encircle, who has a share of shade. It is always smiling and of blaguer, and it is a little perverse. It is often struck by Yuki and Kyô because it makes advances with Tohru as well as perverse allusions. His/her best friends are Hatori and Ayame, which is them also struck by the curse. Ayame and Shigure often make pretense be in love one with the other. Shigure is the first to have acknowledged in Tohru the curse and it is also that which trusts him more. Shigure likes Akito so much that it ardently wishes to destroy it. It had a sexual relationship with Ren to irritate Akito. It uses Tohru for strange projects.

Kagura, the wild boar

Kagura (楽羅) has semi-long brown hair, and brown eyes. It has a personality similar to the sign zodiacal by which it is cursed, namely wild boar, becoming sometimes suddenly very violent, especially towards Kyô, with which it is insane in love. The only girl whom it lets approach Kyô without being annoyed is Tohru. Kyô and she played often together when they were small and she had made him promise to marry it later by threatening it with a stone… It is two years older than Kyô and the others, and attends a different college. Contrary to much of those which undergo the curse, it has a very harmonious family life, but does not mean well with his/her adoptive sister Rin, which is also under the effect of the curse. In spite of his paces of little girl and his changes of abusive nature one will quickly realize that it is very ripe.

Hatsuharu, the ox

Hatsuharu (發春) is one year younger than Tohru, Kyô and Yuki. It is the ox of the twelve animals of the zodiac (it is transformed into cow Norman). According to the legend the rat would have Bern the ox so that this one lets it go up on its back to go to the festival organized by God. Once arrived in God the rat would be descended quickly to be the first with the festival, and everyone thus makes fun of ox because it was stupid. Consequently everyone also makes fun of Hatsuharu, and he hated Yuki because of that until the latter encourages it to be unaware of the mockeries. To escape this pain it created for itself a double personality (black Haru), which makes its angers extremely violent. Its other facet (white Haru), which is that is visible even a little when it is calm, in the moon. He is the rival of Kyô in martial arts and follows courses with Kazuma Sôma. He has the grey hair with some black wicks, and has paces of motorcyclist, which is worth a reputation of " to him; bad boy" with the college. Being however too young, it drives to bicycle and not motor bike. It has a very bad direction of the orientation, and is very in love with Rin, while saying sometimes that Yuki was its first love.

Kisa, the tiger

Kisa (杞紗) is an contained little girl and really shy person. Its hair as its eyes is yellow orange. She sealed her voice one day, because she had enough of it to be made insult by the pupils of her class because of the color of her hair but also because of Akito, which these close relations are unaware of. Tohru was the only one to include/understand it, this one thus became a model for Kisa. She adores it more than all, follows it everywhere as soon as she of on the occasion, always calls it " onee-chan" (おねえちゃん), which means " large sœur" in Japanese, and regards it as such. Since this meeting, it took again gradually the use of its voice. Very near to Hiro (the sheep), it was very disappointed when this one gave up it when it was made maltreat by the girls of its class.

Momiji, the rabbit

Momiji (紅葉) adores Tohru unconditionally. It is with half German Japanese and half , with the fair hair and the brown eyes. Although it is 15 years old, it behaves like a kid of 10. It spends much time to the office of his father and thus with Tohru which is employed there part-time. It seems to live close to Hatori and Hatsuharu. Under its merry air and its frivolous manners, it hides much sadness, because his/her mother not wanting to accept it, Hatori erased the memory of this one. It has also a little sister being called Momo but this one does not know it as a big brother. It is learned however thereafter that she it spy and admires it much: she asks Tohru to ask Momiji to become her big brother. Thereafter the appearance of Momiji will change, it stops getting dressed with a uniform with girl, becomes larger and also more beautiful but he always likes the ices and still walks with his bag in the rabbit shape although it became charming and that it makes crack all girls who crosses it. He plays of the violin. In Japanese, rabbit says usagi. At the beginning of the manga it is in 3rd then it will return in 2nd in the same college as Tohru, Kyo and Yuki. But in volume 20, Momiji grows and it with the air suddenly riper. It is in love with Tohru and says it to Kyo so that this one understands that if it quickly does not acknowledge its love with this one it has will lose it definitively. If it makes such a seemingly opposite action with its own interests it is because it is informed of the love that Tohru carries in Kyo and it wishes that she be happy above all.

Hatori, the dragon (transformation into hippocampus)

Hatori (はとり) is the doctor of the Sôma clan and all the time seems to be with the bedside of Akito. It has the black hair, from which a wick falls on the left eye. In spite of its austere manners it is a very nice person who does not want to see Tohru unhappy and used by Akito and Shigure, the dog. Among the twelve animals of the zodiac, it is the dragon, but when a girl throws herself to her neck it transforms herself into hippocampus (the shape child of the dragon according to Japanese mythology), and it finds very that embarrassing. His/her best friends are Shigure and Ayame, the snake and it seems responsible for his/her cousins Momiji, the rabbit and Hatsuharu, the ox. When Akito decides to erase the memory of somebody, it is Hatori which takes care some. He lived short, but very intense, history of love with an young woman, Kana. Akito did not accept it and in a dash of anger, made lose an eye with Hatori, from where its wick of hair to hide this wound. Kana felt responsible for this injustice and sank in the madness. To save it, Hatori erased the memory to him. By aillor Mayuko, the professor de Tohru, Yuki and Kyô, but also the best friend of Kana is in love with Hatori…

Ayame, the snake

Ayame (綾女) is the big brother of Yuki, 10 years its elder (it is 27 years old). It much physically resembles to him (except for the fact that Ayame has long grey hair and the yellow eyes), but in term of character they are completely opposite. When their mother sold Yuki with Akito, it did not help it; today he wants to be much of it and seeks to reduce the gap between them two. Moreover, when it was young, it did not make any effort to include/understand the feelings of the others. It exaggerates always too much and its many attempts to approach Yuki appearing with the vain first habords, evolve/move nevertheless of volume in volume. Ayame is an exuberant person extremely blazing, extravertie and which is caught for a king, who gets dressed in a very conspicuous way and often wears clothing of " femme" (because of its work). He is dressmaker and holds a shop which manufactures somewhat particular clothing since intended to serve the male phantasms (behavior of servant, wedding gown for man…). That with the assistance of its assistant and friendly Mine (pronounce " minné"). It is also very close to Shigure, but has much respect and admiration for Hatori. Among the twelve animals of the Zodiac, Ayame is the snake, it is thus very sensitive to heat and cold. Ayame and Mine like, Mine knows the curse which surrounds the Sôma family but one does not know how it was briefing.

Rin, the horse

Rin (依鈴) is a very mysterious girl, with the hair and the black eyes. Target of choice for Akito (which will cut the hair to him), it was often beaten. She thus elected residence at Kagura, her parents having rejected it. She was adopted by Kagura and her parents, but she does not get along much with her because she badly supports the cordial atmosphere of the family of Kagura which returns it to its own situation. Being of determined nature, it does all so that the curse disappears. She is in love with Hatsuharu, but because of a traumatism caused by Akito, does not approach any. She wishes more than any rising curse of Sôma in order to make Hatsuharu happy. But to break this love which it tests for Hatsuharu, Akito will lock up it in the part of the cat. Kureno will leave it from there discreetly and it will take it along to the hospital. Not supporting to remain at the hospital, she flees but disappeared in full street because of her state of weakness). But Hatsuharu passing by chance in this same street will save it and take it along to Kazuma. Hatsuharu will render comprehensible to him at which point he likes it, that for nothing in the world he will not cease liking and he is finally sufficiently mature to protect it. Its love is so sincere that he will manage to temporarily overcome the resistance of the animal which is in him and to resist Akito. Its true name is Isuzu (依鈴).

Hiro, the sheep

Hiro (燈路) is the sheep of the Chinese zodiac. It clearly has the hair châtain and the eyes brown dark transfering slightly on the red. It is the best friend of Kisa, it is very protective towards it (he is deeply in love with it but does not dare to acknowledge to him) and becomes straightforwardly paranoiac when somebody approaches some, because he wants that nothing can arrive to him after having seen that of which Akito is able (he assisted with what arrived at Isuzu). At the beginning very insolate malgrès its age (11 years), it little by little will try with difficulty to evolve/move. It indeed seems to hate Tohru because of the immense love that Kisa carries to him, seeing in it a rival form. But its will to change to be able to make Kisa happy will push it to modify its behavior. One understands of aillor that such an insolence naurelle but does not have with its sufferings interior: the scene between Akito and Isuzu torments it as well as the feeling to have habandonné Kisa when it needed him. Satsuki, the mother of Hiro, is a very protective woman dazed towards her son. Its curse does not seem absolutely to disturb it. It has also a fore-mentioned sister Hinata who is born with the necks from the history; one perceives thanks to it his true character because it behaves like a particularly attentive frêre.

Ritsu, the monkey

Ritsu (利津) is a boy with the semi-long gilded hair which gets dressed like a girl because of a character extrèmement timid and a traumatism lived during its childhood, feeling more reassured when it is disguised. It abille thus much with dresses or Kimono S, some having summers borrowed from Kagura with which he gets along very well. Such a practice clearly supports the situations of misunderstanding with those which it meets for the first time. It is cursed by the sign of the monkey. Its traumatism is also translated like a besion to be excused madly in any circumstance, that it is a problem there or not, that it of it is responsible or not. This traumatism comes from a deep uselessness and sense of inferiority resulting from the behavior from his/her parents who were to excuse themselves with each bètise of which he was the author (being rather awkward). It thus ended up imitating them. When it enters its madness of excuse, the only means of stopping it is to give him a small blow on the coasts. When Tohru meets it she says to him that it should not be excused for its arrival in the world, that it must forcing exist somebody on Earth which would need him. It finished its studies and works. Perhaps a history of love will be created between attached edition of Shiguré and him (but it will not appear in the manga for lack of place).

Kureno, the cock

Kureno (紅野) is a person with the hair châtains and the brown eyes. It is extremely reserved, and never seems not to leave Akito. It was cursed by the sign of the cock, but was transformed into sparrow. It was the released first of the curse at the 14 years age. Its attachment with Akito comes from a deep feeling of pity which it feels for it. It however will fall in love with Arisa by recontrant it by chance in a mini-market. Its altruistic character gives the impression which it is weak and from always doing only one can prevent oneself asks him. Being released of the curse it will save Rin when this one was found locked up in the house of the cat by Akito. It will avoura in Tohru that its " lien" is already to break and that it cannot betray Akito, consequently sacrificing the love incipient which it feels for Arisa) and also the largest secrecy from the Soma family: Akito is a woman. Fortunately, it will end up being detached from Akito and will be able to finally live happy in company of the woman whom it loves.

Akito

It is in fact in love with Shigure. Since its more tender childhood it is tormented by this bond which very for it (what explains its behavior) but very with is really rocked during the day of the release of the curse of Kureno. Since, its attitude worsened explaining the birth of a suffering and a faintness even larger at the douzes like at Kyo.

Ren

Kazuma

Kazuma (藉真) is the Master of martial arts of the family Sôma and the adoptive father of Kyô. He taught martial arts has Kyo, Kagura and Yuki. Just like the others Summoned, it will understand that all rests on the frail shoulders of Tohru, and besides will draw up Kyô and Tohru first once vis-a-vis their feelings, by withdrawing the bracelet of Kyô. Tohru obviously will see the monstrous appearance of the cat, but will end up succeeding in saving Kyô first once. The grandfather of Kazuma was itself born under the sign from the cat. Kazuma is not zodiac.

Momo

Momo (モモ) is the little sister of Momiji. She is very intrigued by her brother who is distant from her. Their mother wanted to lose the memory because Momiji is transformed into rabbit. She thus knows from now on Momiji by thinking that he is the son of another Sôma. Momo take it for his/her cousin but would like to be his sister.

Other characters

Tohru Honda

Tohru Honda () is a 16 year old young girl to the eyes and the long brown hair which breathes the love of life although it is orphan. It is a girl very soft and nice who never puts herself in anger, it is to some extent the stereotype of the naive young girl. His/her father (who can resemble Kyô Sôma, although they do not have any family ties) died when it was three years old and his/her mother has just died in an car accident. The family of its father collected it but Tohru makes a point of paying itself its expenses not to be an embarrassment. However, the house of his/her grandfather is in restoration. Not wishing to impose itself in her friends and not having nowhere where to go, she sees herself in the obligation to live under a tent that she plants by chance on the property of the Sôma. She finds the Sôma clan fascinating and develops very solid bonds of friendship with several members of this family: Kyô, Yuki, Momiji, and Kisa. She becomes a kind of refuge for several of them, which brings all the members who have problems to unload at Shigure to see it. Finally, Tohru decides that it will raise by all the possible ways the curse which weighs on the Soma family before spring so that Kyo is not locked up and ends up falling in love with him, which is reciprocal.

Arisa Uotani

Arisa Uotani () is a girl with the faded hair, therefore fair, and with the blue eyes. It is one of the best friends of Tohru, and she adores to fight against Kyô. She lived one turbulent because she belonged to a gang, of which she was saved by Tohru and the mother of this one. She only lives with her alcoholic father since his/her mother left with another man. She will meet Kureno Sôma, which is the cock of the animals of the Chinese zodiac, and to fall in love from there, without knowing that he belongs to the clan Sôma. It is by aillor, and malgrès his past of " yankee" , very intelligent.

Saki Hanajima

Saki Hanajima () is different the best friend of Tohru. She has long black hair, often attached in braid, and the black eyes also. Since its birth, it has a particular psychic gift which enables him to feel the emotions of people, in other words, it perceives the waves. It often underwent the mockeries of her classmates who treated it of witch. As one regarded it as such, one made him swallow a lizard of force. She then exclaimed " I want that you meures" with the child to which she wanted some and that Ci collapsed by ground. It was made return and the only ones to accept it were Tohru Honda and Arisa. Saki is very a beautiful young girl, always vêtue of black, color which reflects its personality: it behaves in a very glaucous way. She known as in love with Kazuma Summoned (but makes some carries a great admiration to him), the adoptive father of Kyô and would see herself well becoming her mother-in-law, idea which causes the total hilarity of the group, except for Kyô. Oddly she likes much the Shōjo and the novels for girls. She has a little brother able to launch bad fates right thanks to the name of the person.

Kimi Todo

Kimi is a very pretty girl with the long black hair and the brown eyes. She has an intermediate size finally normal for her old. She uses more her physique at her that her moral direction. She never changes cut she adores that one. Kimi belongs to the committee of the pupils. In its family, there is her father, his mother and she. His/her mother belongs to the elite, therefore it was high in a very rich medium. One day, it was said to him that it was very pretty and since, it lost weight and became more plague. She believes that she can leave with all the guy whom she wants. She gets along well with Kakeru and adores to tease Nao. Very nice Kimi with the air, but it is a true small plague. Its master key favorite time is to make to enrager the members of the fan-club prince Yuki while profiting that it is rather close to Yun-yun (as they work both at the committee of the pupils) to be shown rather familiar. It is removed from rim enough. She gets along well with Kakeru, will know why… She believes naively that all the boys who know it really like it and that the girls which côtoient it are only appearing to emphasize it. She believes besides also which she can leave with as many boys as she wants it, as long as the latter like it. Kimi is in fact a very honest girl with itself! (sorry one does not know more about it >< of it)

Machi Kuragi

Machi Kuragi () is member of the committee which Yuki in which directs it tien the role of accountant. It is the half-sister of Kakeru (the son of the mistress of its father). There was a conflict in its family: his father being very rich, it was not known if it were it or Kakeru which was going to inherit. She has 1 year less than Kakeru and is a girl; but this one is an illegitimate child. To have this heritage their respective mothers raised them under conditions almost Spartans. Such an education made it unforeseeable and sometimes it explodes in crises devastators. Indeed, feeling a lack of love on behalf of her mother it did everything to answer waitings of this one which wished that it be " parfaite". But malgrès all its efforts, it did not manage to fill this lack. And these too heavy waitings developed at it a very major fear of all that is " parfait". She does not like the too perfect things: the files arranged well, smooth snow on the ground, chalks piled up well in a box, and that, following a traumatism of childhood (it tried to be perfect to gain the love of her mother…). She is victim at one time of the history of a rumor which says that she wanted to assassinate her little brother; brother whose birth has permi to solve the problem of succession, it is him which inherits all. For that, it would have been " jalouse" and thus would have liked to be avenged. Of course that is perfectly false. Kakeru succeeded in demolishing influence of his/her mother but not Machi. She fled thus and only lives in an apartment whose cleanliness recalls that of the kitchen at Shiguré, before the intervention of Tohru, qualified d'" ocean of immondices". She admires really Yuki because it includes/understands it and accepts it (what is reciprocal). But Machi is secretly in love with Yuki and this one goes, with the wire of the volumes, to fall in its turn in love with it because it feels recognized by her.

Kakeru Manabe

What follows reveals one of the secrecies revealed further in the history.

Kakeru Manabe () is the best friend of Yuki. Even if at this one beginning hates it, it is because it cannot support its behavior which points out that of his/her Ayame brother to him. But gradually it will learn with knowing best and will develop a strong feeling of friendship. It is the only one which manages to really put Yuki in anger and to oblige it to release itself. He adores to annoy Yuki by treating it of " young girl of good famille" or " princesse" , and by inventing the nickname " to him; Yun-Yun". His/her boyfriend names Komaki, and it is not other than the girl of the man who drove the car which reversed and killed the mother of Tohru. He also perished in this accident.

Naohito Sakuragi

Naohito Sakuragi () belonged to the committee of the pupils. It is unceasingly in anger and often disputes with Kakeru. Causes: the behavior of Kakeru which it does not include/understand and angers devastators of Machi. It reproaches the others their lack of serious. It is the only one with really being concerned with association (more than Yuki, even if this last serious remainder). Nao (diminutive) is regarded as the rival of Yuki. He admires it and he is simply jealous of him, because the girl whom he loves, Minagawa Motoko, is in love with him. But that, it will not acknowledge it.

Megumi Hanajima

It is the brother of Saki. It has same the hair and the same character but it cannot send and receive waves. On the other hand it with faculty to curse somebody right by knowing his name. It will on the occasion to one by one frighten the members of the club of prince Yuki by quoting their name. He lives in a house with his sister Saki and the only girls whom he appreciates apart from his sister are Arisa and Tohru. He very deeply loves of aillor his sister.

Undermine Kuramae

Assistant of Ayame in her store, it leaves with this one but only Yuki is with the current. She knows the secrecy of Somâ. When she sees or believes to see a beautiful young girl, she becomes hysterical and puts herself to imagine thousands of clothing to him.

Mayuko Shiraki

Main teacher of our three heroes, it loves his pupils. It is " secrètement" (Shiguré immediately guessed it) in love with Hatori, but had been always delighted by its happiness with Kana, because they are better friends and she wishes her happiness even at the price of his. She moreover left with Shigure during one month but the imperceptible character of this one cut court to any durable relation. It is only in the final volume which it will leave with Hatori after this one required of him.
