History
Froidefontaine, which knew the fame starting from the beginning of XIIe century thanks to its priory, has the privilege owe its existence with a myth founder. In fact of myth, it is rather about a legend, that of Saint-Maimbœuf who would have been assassinated in VIIIe or IXe century by non-believers near the cold fountain close which he was buried. The miracles which would have occurred thereafter on its tomb impressed people of the country as well as Ermentrude, widow of Thierry 1st, count of Montbeliard - Ferrette, gave on March 8th 1105 to the Abbaye of Cluny its possessions of Froidefontaine for the foundation of a priory. It supplemented then this equipment with the field and the parish of Grosne which then covered a broad territory including Vellescot, Boron, Brebotte, Eschêne, Recouvrance, Normanvillars and the vault of Petit-Croix. The priory thrived during centuries, at least when the bands of truck drivers of XIVe century or the Swedes (in 1632) did not plunder the monasteries. Of 1621 with 1756, the priory belonged to the Jesuits of Ensisheim, then was given by Louis XIV to the royal college of Colmar. With the Revolution, the buildings were sold like national goods. For the period when the country depended on the Saint Worsens until in 1648, Froidefontaine was known under the name of Kaltenbrunn .The church, dedicated to Saint-Pierre and Saint-Paul, preserved elements which saw the foundation of the priory in XIIe century. Until the end of last century an important tilery located on the road of Morvillars functioned. The channel of the Rhone in the Rhine skirts the village and the road of Charmois is equipped with a bridge swing to cross it.
In 1999, 451 inhabitants were listed whereas the population of the village was of 385 in 1803.
