The frioulan ( furlan in frioulan and friulano in Italian) is the most widespread language of the group Rhéto-roman of the Romance Langues, and Eastern. Italy about the Friuli which is in the North-East of the country, close to Slovenia (area of Udine), by several hundreds of thousands of speakers. She has there the statute of regional Langue administrative and school. She is One uses it also a little as literary language. Almost the whole of those which practice it speaks also Italian. --> She is spoken in the area Italy about the Friuli-Venezia Giulia (area of Udine, Pordenone and Gorizia), by approximately five hundred and thousand speakers. She is used there in the bilingual road signs (frioulan/Italian). It is the second minority language in Italy. She is also spoken in other Italian areas and the world, by the emigrants of the XXe century and their descendants (Slovenia, Croatia, Romania, Suisse, France, Luxembourg, Belgium, Germany, Australia, Canada, the United States, Venezuela, Brésil, Uruguay, Argentine). There would be in all approximately a million speakers.

Alternatives of the frioulan

One would distinguish six dialectal varieties, according to the linguists:
  • the average or central frioulan spoken in the area about Udine, used on the official documents and considered as purest;
  • the carnique one or frioulan of Carnia (the carnic Alps),
  • the Eastern frioulan or of the Isontino, in the province of Gorizia,
  • the Western frioulan in the province of Pordenone.
