Friedrich Stowasser (* Vienna, December 15th 1928; † New Zealand, February 19th 2000), better known under the name of Friedensreich Hundertwasser , was an artist painter, thinker and a Austrian Architecte or rather as he announced in his marked proclamation on January 24th, 1990, a doctor of architecture .
He invents his name of artist starting from Frieden which means “peace” and Reich “the “rich” kingdom” or reich , Friedensreich thus resulting in the “Kingdom of peace” or “rich in peace”. Sto being the Czech word for “hundred” ( hundert in German) and wasser resulting in “water”, Hundertwasser wants to thus say “hundred water” . In the first case, the end to end setting of the two terms gives: “the kingdom of peace (with) hundred water” . Hundertwasser often liked to quote the Japanese translation of its name ( hyaku-sui ).
Although it was born and grew in Austria, the fatherland of choice of Hundertwasser was however the New Zealand, and its principal house the ship Regentag ( day of rain ), an old reorganized tradind ship.
Its message is deeply, viscéralement ecologist and is expressed very early by noticed performances, ecological, artistic and architectural proclamations and in all its achievements (paintings, posters, stamps, houses, architectures, books…). Its proclamations carry titles as Your right to the window where he affirms that in a collective habitat, the inhabitant is Master of all that he can reach of his window in other words, the originator must take account of the desires of the user, For a company without waste , the madness of cleaning , the toilet-humus , etc He is concerned with " the ecological Impressed " of the citizen and the modern townsman. Consequently it creates buildings with trees with the windows ( the tree-tenant ), conceives and realizes downtown and in the countryside of the houses whose roofs are covered with greenery and plants, the grounds on unequal level and encourages the owners and the workmen with being creative and bringing a personal key to their work, for example thanks to the mosaic. He likes asymmetry and all that comes to break the order and the monotony of the pure geometry. Its pictorial work is characterized by the organic expansion of the forms and rests on the brightness of the colors. Colors which it frequently employs (often softer) structures about it like Gold, loan with the style baroque Rococo.
One can affirm that Hundertwasser is an unclassable artist marked by an immense love of nature and one of the large pioneers of a humanistic and ecological architecture which tries to reconcile artistic creativity and ecology.
He writes in 1959: " the architecture of today is criminally sterile ".
He denounces the classical architecture like disaster and concentrationnaire and declares enemy straight line that he refuses to employ in his creations. Its architectural achievements, at the same time organic and full with imagination, could be close to the work of Antoni Gaudí. And yet, although they have both a passion for nature and its forms, Hundertwasser is more radical in its designs of the life and happiness in osmosis with nature. Vision divided by many young people architects with the four corners of planet and pioneers of the movement of the éco-village S. It leaves many buildings of which its house-museum in Vienna, as many testimonys of its radical singularity.
Only architectural creations " full with santé" who find thanks to its eyes are:
buildings of Antonio Gaudi with Barcelona.
