Freyming-Merlebach

Freyming-Merlebach ( Freimengen-Merlenbach in German) is a common French located in the department of the the Moselle. It is localized in the natural area of the Warndt and the basin of life of the Moselle-is.

The inhabitants are called Freymingeois, or - more rarely - Freyming-Merlebachois.

History

The current town of Freyming-Merlebach draws its origin from the fusion occurred in 1971 of two communes bordering, located in the Warndt.

  • Of many vestiges of the Gallo-Roman time was found like coins with the effigy of the various emperors, a temple, a low Venus relief…

  • the two villages, born at the dawn of the XVIIe century, took part of the saving in subsistence suitable for a timbered area, the poor ground and of thin settlement. One raises the existence of glassmakers with Merlebach ( Merlebourg ), seigniory of Faulquemont, about 1590 then in Freyming ( Freimengen ) at the time of his foundation per Pierre Ernest de Créhange in 1602. In September 1602, Freimengen (of the drill of Mengen and frei which means frankly (within the meaning of free), its statute of frank village obtains (exemption of taxation of salt and the tobacco).

  • This ground, often delivered to the passage of the belligerents, was not saved either by the plagues of the war: thus the hamlet put at fire and blood by the Swedish in 1637, counted nothing any more but 80 inhabitants at the end of the “tragedy XVIIe century”.

  • When intervene, after 1815, the first prospections for minerals in the oriental party of the Coal basin, the communities of Freyming and Merlebach for a long time draw a considerable part of their income of the craft industry: manufacture of objects out of wooden, shaping of tiles, grinding of the grains… ; a forging mill, located in Sainte-Fontaine, additional of Freyming, as well as about fifteen nail factories occupy, about 1844, a hundred people.

  • About 1905, Freyming-Merlebach is in the middle same mining activity, with new arrivals installed in mining districts especially designed for this industry.

Places and monuments

Religious buildings:

  • the vault of the Holy Trinity, in the city the Vault, built in 1755 (it is the oldest monument of the city).
  • the Saint-Maurice church, in the district of Freyming, built 1911 with 1913.
  • the Notre Dame church, in the district of Merlebach, construction finished in 1915.

The churches Holy Maurice and Notre Dame are both of style néo-baroque, very strongly inspired by the churches of style Baroque which one finds in the south of the Germany. Although having strong resemblances, they are easily différenciables from their copper bulbs located at the top of the bell-tower, characteristics from their forms with each church. The church St Maurice was richly decorated by famous Paul GEISSLER, the stained glasses are of Zettler of Munich, it does not undergo any modification since its construction and passes for an authentic chief of work of art néo-baroque. It is equipped with two organ, the organ of platform is very famous and was built by Frederic HAERPFER in 1930, in many concerts take place there.

Civil buildings:

  • the historical and military Museum: historical elements over the period 1870 - 1945 on the French and German side.
  • the head-frame of the well cuvelette, symbol of the mining inheritance of the coal basin that the city wished to preserve.

  • Tennis : the city has courts of tennis
  • Boulodrome : the city counts several grounds of balls for impassioned game of bowls
