The qualifier Fretless (or without hoop ) is employed when an musical instrument which comprises usually hoops (low Guitare, Viole, Guitare) precisely does not comprise any, giving to the instrument a softer, marrowy or lyric sound. One especially uses this term for the low guitar but also for the guitar.
