The Frescobaldi Family was one of the most important families florentines on the political plan, economic and social.

History of the family

Arrived in the town of Florence probably about the 12th century, Frescobaldi were illustrated in the trade and banking, their principal activities being the production and the trade of wool and silk, the bank loan, the Change, and, as land great landowners, agriculture and the vine growing.

Properties

The Marquis de Frescobaldi are land great landowners (4 200 ha) as well as the wine great landowners (725 ha) of the Toscane. Their properties:

  • field Pomino (Pomino DOC.)
  • field Castelgiocono (Brunello di Montalcino)
  • manor house Castiglioni (Chianti DOCG)
  • Santa Maria (Morellino di Scansano)

The adventure with Mondavi

In 1995, the Marquis de Frescobaldi form a Joint-venture (joint undertaking) with Robert Mondavi and create wines such as " Danzante" , " Luce della Vite" like " Ornellaia " (This last is elected wine of the year by Wine Specatator in 2001). Anxious of the repurchase of the Mondavi house by Constellation Brands at the end of 2004, they try to take again the control of these properties and obtain win for " Luce della Vite" (March 2005) and Ornellaia (April 2005).

Suspicions of fraud

In 2005, the Marchesi de' Frescobaldi are suspected of fraud by the Italian government for the wine of their Castiglione property in Valley di Pesa close to Pontassieve. The suspicions relate to a possible use of grapes come from another area that the area of production in violation of the legislation on names (DOC. and DOCG)

Mondovino

Frescobaldi are also known since Mondovino, documentary Franco-American carried out by Jonathan Nossiter and presented to the Cannes festival in 2004.
