French trotter
The French Trotteur (TF) is an equine race resulting from the old races of horses carriage-builders Norman and only selected for the races of trot.
History of the race
Its origin goes back to the beginning of the XIXe century and is to be sought in the west of France, particularly in Normandy. The breeding then aimed at meeting the needs for the army in horses of service. The French Trotteur since then evolved/moved much because of the many crossings carried out and, with the arrival of the car, of its specialization in the trotting races.
In the years 1830, the stockbreeders crossed indigenous mares with standards English Pur-sang or Arab Pur-sang S but the results was disappointing. This first type of crossing succeeded, in the years 1840 - 1860, that with half-breds coming from England in particular of the Norfolk, race of trotters disappeared today. Appeared then the crossings with Orlov imported of Russia and especially of the Standardbred come from the United States.
Conqueror (1858), Lavater (1867), Norman (1869), Niger (1869) and Phaëton (1871) is the main leaders of race. Almost the whole of the French trotters go down from these five standards.
The contribution of American blood does not have therefore being neglected in terms of breeding with in particular, in the inter-war period, Net Worth , The Great Mac Kinney, Sam Williams and Calumet Delco , this last being a phantom standard since it functioned clandestinely in the years 1940.
In 1864, is founded the Company of the French horse of half-bred which will become later the Company of encouragement to the breeding of the French horse.
Forty-three years later, the first volume of the Stud-book French Trotteur appears which was then open. It was closed in 1937.
In the years 1970 - 1990, occurred a second contribution of blood standardbred. Indeed, Henri Levesque introduced his champion, large the Roquépine , three times victorious of the Prix of America to the American chief of race Star' S Pride then the following year with the one of its sons Ayres . It was born from it Florestan and Granit which, not being registered with the stud-book, could run only abroad or in the “international ones”, tests open to the “horses of all races and all countries”. At the end of their career of races, these two standards were bought by the Haras Nationaux and were authorized with the reproduction of the French trotters. The same applied to a horse of the stable Olry-Roederer (that of Jamin ), Kimberland , by Nevele Pride (other wire of Star' S Pride ), and Astrasia . Then, in the years 1980, some ameliorative standardbred could be used according to very precise rules emitted by the SECF, manager of the stud-book. The stud-book since then has closed again summer but the contribution of this second American blood marked the French trotter become much earlier, in particular thanks to a stockbreeder like Jean-Pierre Dubois whose standards, strongly impregnated of American blood, dominate all the classifications.
The first races of trotters in France took place, in 1836, on the strike of Cherbourg, at the instigation of Ephrem Houel, officer of the National stud farms. One privileged initially the races with assembled trot and the long distances. It resulted a solid animal from it. But gradually, after the First World War, harnessed trot became the discipline queen and the horses gained in swiftness. The Prix of America was created in 1920, in homage to deaths American of the Great War. Illustrated there in particular Pro Patria , first winner, as well as other trotters remained in the legend like Uranie or the Amazon B . From the years 1950, the Grouse , Jamin , Roquépine , One of May , Bellino II , Ideal of Gazeau , Ourasi , were also horses of legend and the ambassadors of the French trotter throughout the world.
It is born each year approximately 11.000 trotters in France but the third only manages to be qualified for the competition. Consequently, much of horses of the equestrian clubs are reformed trotters or not having passed the tests of selection of the races.
