French senatorial elections of 1946
The purpose of the senatorial elections of 1946 are to elect, for the first time, the representatives with the Conseil of the Republic. They take place on November 24th and on December 8th 1946.
Results
The elections are a triumph for the two dominant parties of the French political life of the period: MRP and the PCF. Already, these two formations had gained the most votes at the time of the legislative elections of the previous month. The MRP obtains 62 seats and PCF 61. Behind, the socialist make pale figure with 37 senators. Lastly, RGR is to 25 and the independent and PRL divide 20 seats.
The election with the presidency of the Council of the Republic ratifies logically the victory of candidate MRP Auguste Champetier de Ribes vis-a-vis the Communist Georges Marrane, constant with reserve by the Socialists.
