French presidential Election of 1995
The seventh presidential election of the Fifth Republic was held in France the April 23rd and May 7th 1995. Last nine candidates presented themselves and Jacques Chirac, candidate of the RPR, obtained to the second turn 52,64% of the voices vis-a-vis the socialist candidate , Lionel Jospin. Succeeding the two mandates of the Socialist François Mitterrand, Jacques Chirac was invested in her functions of president of the Republic the May 17th 1995.
This election was in particular marked by a strong rate of abstention (21,6% with the first turn and 20,3% with the second turn) and by elimination from the outgoing Prime Minister, Edouard Balladur, a long time favorite of the surveys but arrive in third position at the first turn with only 18,58% of the voices.
The shortly after the second turn, France celebrated the fiftieth birthday of the May 8th 1945 and was represented by two presidents since Jacques Chirac was elected but yet not invested and François Mitterrand had not left the capacity yet.
Results
After the election
After fourteen years of socialist presidency, Jacques Chirac is invested in her functions the May 17th 1995. It names Alain Juppe, her assistant of the town hall of Paris and especially Foreign Minister with the Gouvernement Balladur, at the post of Prime Minister.
Very unpopular, Jacques Chirac dissolves the National Assembly the April 21st 1997, thinking of taking speed the left before the legislative ones planned for 1998 and of preserving a majority at the Parliament.
After the second turn of June 1st 1997, the union RPR - UDF, which then counted 472 deputies out of 577, keeps nothing any more but 253 of them. The plural left of Lionel Jospin (socialist, radical, communist, green) counts 319.
Jacques Chirac appoints the June 2nd 1997 Lionel Jospin Prime Minister, to form the Third cohabitation, which will last five years.
