The law on the presumption of innocence , also called Law Guigou , is a voted French Loi the June 15th 2000 which modifies the Criminal procedure code. The purpose of this law is to better protect the rights of the people put in examination, in particular by reforming the Detention pending trial.

It is mainly the work of the Minister for the Justice which was in place at that time, Elisabeth Guigou.

The flagship measures of this law are:

  • introduction of the call of the verdicts of the Courts of Assizes;
  • reform of the Release on parole and the application of the sorrows;
  • reinforcement of the right of the victims at all the stages of the penal procedure;
  • reinforcement of the Presumption of innocence of the people blamed by the Justice;
  • possibility for put in examination to ask an allowance for title of the expenses not paid by the State but exposed by it.

Amongst other things symbolic system measurement reinforcing the presumption of innocence, the name change of the court of criminal appeal for the Room of the instruction.
