French highway A31
In France, the Autoroute A31 goes from the Franco-Luxembourg Frontière in the prolongation of the Luxembourg highway A3 (with the Border post of Zoufftgen) to Beaune where it joined the A6. It belongs to the European Routes E25, E21, E23 and E17 starting from Langres. It 232 km is long
It is free Luxembourg until Toul (toll of Gye). It serves the towns of Thionville, Metz, Nancy and Dijon. It should be noted that it crosses the two first, while it circumvents the two seconds. Its flow is one of most important of France (100 000 vehicles/days with the height of Cross of Hauconcourt) since mix interurban displacements with the furrow native of the Moselle region and the transit of heavy trucks and light vehicles in source or bound for the Luxembourg, of the Belgium, the Netherlands or the Germany. Thus A31 accumulates several vocations, which do not go without posing many problems on the level of the traffic: initially, A31 is a European axis impossible to circumvent (or almost) for the holiday makers and road Dutch and Belgian (even German…) who go in mass in the south of France. A31 is indeed an overloaded link of the axis Rotterdam - Lyon or Rotterdam - Milan. Then, between Luxembourg and Toul, in the west of Nancy, this international traffic doubles intense interurban displacements: the big cities of the Lorraine Sillon (Nancy, Metz, Thionville) are connected by this highway and it is used as way of daily course for tens of thousands of frontier French going each day to Luxembourg.
The Luxembourg-Toul section
To face the problem of clogging, it is question of doubling the free portion of A31 by the construction of the A32. The debate thus remains at the point died for the moment, whereas the project of A32 has been in the paperboards for 15 years. In short, are opposed the partisans of a new highway (of which the layout does not achieve the unanimity, far from there) and those preferring the complete setting with 2×3 ways of A31 until Toul, the reinforcement of the railway grid, the Piggyback traffic and even the development of the water ways. In any event, if A32 must be born, it will not be before 2020.Free Luxembourg with Toul, it is rather badly maintained on this section, even if these last years of work of reclassifications (crossed from Metz in particular) somewhat improved its state. A31 is considered, on this section, like very accidentogene; she, indeed, knew very many accidents fatal since her creation. However, to believe the statistics of them on the subject, it would hardly be dangeureuse than another highway. This is the beneficial effect of the many fixed radars which mark out it, the speed limits or a belief concerning its real or supposed dangerosity, A31 is not, today, more dangerous than another.

Work on A31
Between Beaune and Langres the roadway will be widened from 2 to 3 ways out of 98 kilometers. Work is estimated at 310 million euros, entirely financed by APRR (Highway Paris the Rhine the Rhone) and will last during 4 years.

Close to Nancy a highway crossroads enters A31 and A33. A33 which goes towards Lunéville/St Dié/Strasbourg
