French establishments of India

The French establishments of India are formed of the whole of the territories and commercial counters that the France maintained in the Indian Sous-continent until the middle of the 20th century.

During conflicts which transfer to clash France and the Great Britain in India, number as of these places were yielded to the British, then returned by the Traité of Versailles (1783). Following the Treated of Paris, the rights of France were confirmed and the latter managed them directly starting from 1848, a governor, a deputy and a senator representing the State there.

In 1949, after disorders and at the conclusion of a referendum, Chandernagor was returned to India and integrated the State of Bengal. As for the other territories, they joined India de facto on November 1st 1954, the whole being officialized by the treaty of transfer of the May 28th 1956.

In 1948, the French establishments of India counted 362  000 inhabitants divided out of 509 km ².

Karikal, Mahé, Pondichéry and Yanaon were gathered in order to compose the Territoire of Pondichéry .
