French School of the Far East

The French École of the Far East (EFEO) is an establishment of research French dedicated to the study of civilizations of the Asia.

History

Having for origin the archaeological mission of Indo-China, the French School of the Far East is created in 1898 and settles in 1900 with Hanoi. A decree (see Bulletin of the French School of the Far East , volume I, 1901) fixes its missions and its Statut S.

Its original seat was then with Saigon, with the Vietnam, where was established, starting from the objects collected during the archaeological missions, the museum Louis Finot. The School carries out multiple archaeological excavations as well as the restoration of many buildings, in particular on the site of Angkor, with the Kampuchea.

At the time of the independence of Indo-China, the seat was transferred to Paris. From the School concluded from multiple agreements with the various countries constituting its research fields in order to preserve centers in Asia. Belonging to the network of the French Schools abroad and from now on public corporation in scientific, cultural and professional matter (EPSCP) under supervision of the Minister of education main road, higher education and research, the French School of the Far East remains an original structure in the scientific landscape, burst in several centers thus confirming its will of a study related to the ground. It is established with Phnom Penh and Siem Reap with the Kampuchea, with HongKong and Beijing in China, with Pondichéry in India, with Jakarta in Indonesia, with Kyōto with the Japan, Vientiane with the Laos, with Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, with Yangoon (Rangoon) with the Myanmar (Burma), with Chiang May in Thailand, with Taipei in Republic of China (Taiwan) and with Hanoi with the Vietnam.

Historically related on the Archeology, the history and the languages of Asia, its research fields also open from now on with the Ethnologie.

From 1907, it is in load of the conservation of the site of Angkor, with the Kampuchea.

Centers of the School

It carries out the excavations on the sites of Sriwijaya in Indonesia, Patani in Thailand and Angkor in Kampuchea.
