French Republic
The French Republic is the official name of the France, sound State and sound Political regime. The initials RF correspondent are also official.
History
The name of French Republic covered several republican modes French since the proclamation with the first République in September 1792:- During the French revolution, starting from the proclamation of the Republic (Convention, Directory and Consulate) (1792 - 1804)
- Second Republic (1848 - 1851)
- Third Republic (1870 - 1940)
- Fourth Republic (1946 - 1958)
- Fifth Republic (since 1958)
The years 1940 - 1944 were held under the German occupation and the Régime of Vichy gave up the term of French Republic in favor of that of French State , a satellite State of the forces of the Axis. The period 1944 - 1946 is sometimes indicated under the term of Buffer state. The political authorities installation by Charles de Gaulle at Algiers during the Second world war restored the use of initials “RF” and its French Committee of national release took in June 1944 the name of “Provisional government of the French Republic”.
Stamps
According to the directives of the Universal postal union (UPU), the postal administrations must register the mention of the transmitting country in Latin alphabet (in short or long form). For France, the mention “French Republic” was most frequent as of the first stamp in 1849.The exceptions were under the Second Empire of Napoleon III the mention “Worsens French”, and under the Régime of Vichy of the marshal Pétain “Post offices French” or “France”. The use of “RF” reappears on certain emissions of 1944-1945. The legend “France” is generalized on all the emissions of 1975 to 1981. Lastly, mention “RF” is shown of 1999 at the end of 2004, while at the same time it is perfectly known that she contravenes the directives of the UPU since she makes difficult the recognition of the name of the country in international forwardings of mail. Since the end of 2004, the mention employed is “France”.
During the Second world war, several stamps of Propaganda of the Resistance and the stamps of the colony S whose authorities had rejoined the general De Gaulle were marked “French Republic” or “RF”.
