French National committee

The French National committee is the authority of the free France which held place of Gouvernement of 1941 to 1943.

This committee made following the the Council of defense of the Empire , more restricted, created on October 27th, 1940.

The committee was created on September 24th, 1941 by an ordinance signed by the chief of free France, the general de Gaulle, with London. It will be active until June 1943, date of its fusion with the civil and military Commandement of Algiers, directed by the general Giraud, within the French Comité of the national Release.

February 21st, 1943 it names Jean Moulin secretly, then with London, minister and only representing French National committee in metropolis and charges it with creating an authority of single coordination of interior Resistance.

Composition

It was composed of six civilians and six soldiers:
  • brigadier general Charles de Gaulle, president
  • Rene Pleven, police chief with the Economy, Finances, and the Colonies. Responsible for the coordination of the civil administrative departments.
  • major general Paul Legentilhomme, police chief with the War.
  • Maurice Dejean, police chief with the Foreign affairs until October 18th, 1942 (revocation), replaced in interim by Pleven then by Rene Massigli.
  • Rene Cassin, police chief with Justice and State education.
  • Andre Diethelm, police chief with the Action in the metropolis, Work, and Information.
  • Andre Philip. police chief inside starting from July 27th, 1942.
  • Jacques Soustelle, police chief with Information starting from July 27th, 1942.
  • air brigadier general Martial Valin, police chief with the Air forces.
  • vice-admiral Emile Muselier, police chief with the Navy and the Merchant navy, until March 3rd, 1942 (resignation) replaced by the rear-admiral Philippe Auboyneau starting from March 4th, 1942.
  • lieutenant-general of arméee Georges Catroux, police chief without department starting from March 4th, 1942.
  • rear-admiral Georges Thierry d' Argenlieu, police chief without department starting from March 4th, 1942.
