Frejus

Frejus in French (to pronounce //), Frejús in Of Provence according to the traditional standard and Freju (S) according to the standard mistralienne (to pronounce //), is a common French, located in the department of the Var and the area Provence-Alp-Coast of Azure on bank of the Mediterranean, with the mouth of the Argens (left bank) and of the Reyran (left bank), the Chef-lieu of the canton, the seat of the évêché and the diocese, a Seaside resort of the Riviera, a town of Art and History dating from old the Quoted Roman of Forum Julii and colony named Colonia Octaviorum .

Fréjus is located at the end Is department Var, in the alluvial Plaine common to the Argens and of the Reyran, between the Massif of the Moors to the Western and that of Esterel. Toponymy

The name of the common car its origins of the name of the Roman colony Forum Julii , being able to result in gone of Jules , transformed into Foro Julii since the Table of Peutinger. Before 1801, the name was written Frejus without Acute accent.

History

Antiquity

The exact date of the foundation of Forum Julii is dubious, but the city exists at least in 43 av. J. - C. since it appears in the correspondence between Plancus and Cicéron. The date of 49 av. J. - C. remains most probable. Of this first “forum” we know only little thing. It is in Fréjus that Octave will repatriate the galères taken with Marc Antoine at the time of the battle of Actium in 31 av. J. - C. Between 29 and 27 av. J. - C. Forum Julii becomes colony under the name of Colonia Octaviorum and receives the veterans of the VIIIe legion. The city becomes an important market of flow of an artisanal and agricultural production.

Under Auguste, the city becomes then Forum Iulii Octavanorum colonia, quae Pacensis appellatur and Classica . As from this time, the city begins its development and becomes thus one of the naval bases of the Roman military fleet of the Mediterranean. The Middle Ages

Rebirth

Being stopped in an inn, an assembly is formed in the night from June 30th to July 1st with the cries of “ To dead the huguenots! ”. Gaspard of Villeneuve, baron of the Arcs, and governor of the city, had sworn to protect them.

In 1586, the enclosure is increased, and the king of France sends a garrison of Gascons. The inhabitants of Frejus call then upon the marquis Trans, huguenot, so that it removes them from these soldiers considered as foreigners. They introduce its troop of night in December 1588 and massacre all the garrison. In October 1590, the duke of Savoy which was made proclaim count de Provence by the Members of a league makes an incursion to Fréjus.

Recent time

Frejus is the Chef-lieu canton represented by the General adviser and mayor Élie Brun (UMP). The commune is attached to the 5 {{E}} district of the VAr represented by the Député Georges Ginesta (UMP).
